HIST 1302: U.S. History Survey from the Civil War Spring 2008 Exam 1 Review Sheet Be prepared to define and give the significance of the following terms: Ghost Dance Populists white man's burden 14 Points Scopes Trial Emma Goldman marcus garvey Lost Generation henry ford Welfare Capitalism Border Patrol Meriam Report Be prepared to answer both essay questions below. I will select one at random on exam day. Please note that your essay must contain complete sentences, an introductory paragraph, a series of body paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph. (1) Drawing from BOTH class lectures and outside readings, discuss the evolution of american foreign policy from the late nineteenth century through the end of the 1920s. What were America's foreign policy objectives during these years, and how did these objectives change, if at all? What did the federal government do, specifically, in pursuit of these objectives, and how did the international community respond to its efforts? What, in your opinion, was the most significant, most decisive foreign policy development during these years? (2) Drawing from BOTH class lectures and outside readings, discuss the evolution of race relations in the United States from the end of Reconstruction through the end of the 1920s. What efforts were America's ethnic/cultural minority groups making to combat persistent prejudice and inequality, if any? What kinds of obstacles did they face in the pursuit of these goals, and what methods did they employ in overcoming them? Were they successful? Explain. Finally, how would you characterize gender relations during the 1920s? What kinds of strides were women making toward sexual, political and economic equality, and were their efforts successful? Explain.
