425: AST Research Topics in Astronomy and Astrophysics 2003-2004 Instructor: Prof. Chris Matzner Office: 1301 McLennan Labs Phone: 416-978-2172 email: matzner@astro.utoronto.ca This is a course of directed research. Students will identify and conctact potential research advisers, and should have chosen their supervisor by October 10. Subsequently, they should meet frequently (at least weekly) with the adviser to ensure steady progress. Any research member of the Dept. of Astronomy and Astrophysics or CITA can serve as an adviser. Please refer to the following websites: http://www.astro.utoronto.ca/ and http://www.cita.utoronto.ca/ Projects typically consist of: observing; data analysis; computer modelling; mathematical analysis; programming; or instrument construction, design, and testing. Course Schedule and Evaluation: 10 Sept. (TBA) 19 Sept. Department Jamboree (good for finding advisers) CITA Jamboree Instructional/Organizational meeting. I will discuss research methods and strategies for applying to graduate school. Project desciptions due to me. These should clearly describe the problem to be solved and the planned method of solving it. First Project Report: sent to me, cc'd to research adviser.
