Stevens Kelly Mini Unit
For my mini unit, I introduced my 6th grade math class to the strategy that Christi showed us a couple of weeks ago in our Math Methods class. I began by asking the class if they thought multiplying the number 11 was easy. I asked them what 2 times 11 is and what 4 times 11 is. They all agreed these were easy multiplication facts to remember. Then I asked what about multiplying 11 by another 2 digit number. They all agreed that was not as easy and they would have to work them step by step. I then asked them what if I could show them a strategy that made multiply 11 by another 2 digit number easy and fun? Most shook their head yes and I proceeded to show them. I wrote down the first and problem showed them the easy steps to solving. The class seemed to be amazed. I asked my mentor teacher to use a calculator to solve and she would do the calculations and agree with our findings. I modeled this many times and asked the students to come up with the problems and we would solve them together on the overhead. The students really seemed to like doing these problems.
