State Nashville Community College SURG 1005 COURSE NAME: CREDIT HOURS: INSTRUCTOR: PHONE: SECRETARY PHONE: COURSE PREREQUESITES: COURSE COREQUESITES: EMAIL: EMAIL: Remedial and Developmental Reading and Writing None Microbiology for Surgical Technology 2 CATALOG COURSE DESCRIPTION: An introduction to basic microbiology, immunology and disease processes with emphasis on antimicrobial techniques used in the operating room. Topics include historical microbiology, pathogenicity, the immune response, sterilization, and antiseptic and disinfection techniques, wound healing and wound classification. ADDITIONAL COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is an introduction to microbial techniques and concepts. Emphasis is placed on applying these concepts in the operating room environment. Topics include, but are not limited to: Historical background of microbiology An overview of microorganisms and the diseases they cause Infectious disease Disinfection and decontamination in the operating room Wound classification and wound healing Types of and parameters for sterilization of operating room instruments and equipment. COURSE OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of this course, students will: Differentiate among various basic microorganisms based on characteristics such as cellular structures, life cycle, mode of transmission, and diseases caused by those microorganisms. Demonstrate knowledge of common infectious diseases and to match those diseases with the microorganisms that cause them. Demonstrate knowledge of disinfection, sterilization, and decontamination agents and techniques used in health care. Demonstrate knowledge of the stages of wound healing, complications of wound healing, and classification of wounds. 1 of 5 COURSE COMPETENCIES: The student will demonstrate knowledge of basic historical background in microbiology by relating historical figures in microbiology to their achievements. The student will describe the immune response and describe the ways in which immunity may be induced. The student will describe ways in which disease is transmitted including ways in which that transmission may be interrupted and factors that influence transmission. Click on the WebCT link (left side of page) Log in with your o WebCT ID (this is your student ID number) o Password (this is you PIN number) REFERENCE MATERIALS: Alexander s Care of the Patient in Surgery, Meeker/Rothrock; Pub: Mosby Surgical Technology for the Surgical Technologist, 2nd Edition, Thomson/Delmar 2 of 5 METHOD OF EVALUATION: Tests will consist of multiple choice, matching questions fill in the blank questions, practical knowledge, and will include diagrams to label. Assignments will be completed throughout the semester and will include in-class as well as take home assignments. The FINAL EXAM will be comprehensive, and completion of the final exam is required to receive a grade for this course. MAKE-UP TESTS: Tests will be taken as a class at the time specified on the schedule unless other arrangements are made PRIOR TO the regularly scheduled time. If a student fails to take a test without making such arrangements, the score for that test will be recorded as ZERO. Makeup tests must be completed with 48 hours of original test unless exception is granted by the instructor. Any make-up test scheduled may require documentation for being absent on the regularly scheduled test day. GRADING CRITERIA: Class Assignments 5% Tests 75% Comprehensive Final 20% GRADING SCALE: 93-100 A 84-92 B 75-83 C* 66-74 D 65 and below F *The class must be completed with a 75 or higher to count toward the Surgical Technology Program. CHEATING: Cheating includes, but is not limited to: The use of books, notes, or any materials containing test information during a test Exchanging information with another individual during a test Submitting someone else s work as you own **Failure to abide by these rules, even once, will result in dismissal from this course with a grade of F.** ATTENDANCE: Arriving late to class THREE times will be counted as one absence. Absences in excess of two will be subject to dismissal from the course with a grade of F.
