of Office the Provost and Senior Vice President Gerontology Degree Designation: BS Mission Statement Through education, research, and service the School of Aging Studies will work to advance society's understanding of the processes of aging, and improve the quality of life for older adults. The School of Aging Studies will educate the next generation of gerontologists so that they can promote the well-being of older persons and advance the field of Aging Studies through the conduct of significant basic and applied gerontological research. The School of Aging Studies will also educate students specializing in other academic and professional areas about important issues in the field of Aging Studies. Students will gain knowledge of key gerontological content, and the ability to communicate this knowledge in both oral and written formats. Student Learning Outcomes Content / Discipline Skills Demonstrate knowledge of key gerontological concepts and Successfully theories. apply knowledge gained during coursework on field placements with community agencies. Demonstrate critical thinking and analytical abilities, including the capacities to engage in inductive and deductive thinking and quantitative reasoning, and to construct sound arguments. Create and deliver effective written reports to the Internship Coordinator during their field placements. Develop effective written and oral presentations during coursework. Contribute effectively to group discussions. Critical Thinking Skills Communication Skills Assessment Strategies Through a variety of mechanisms, including examinations, written summaries of interview with older adults, internships, and a series of term papers, the faculty of the School of Aging Studies will measure students achievement of the identified core learning outcomes. The results of the assessments will be used to improve student achievement and program effectiveness.
