Stevens Kelly EDUC 250 Fall 2007 Building Bridges across Differences P resentation Thematic Unit Topic: Target Grade: Vegetables K 3rd Grade Vegetables like people come in all different colors, sizes and shapes. Zucchini's are long and green. Tomatoes are round and red. Green peppers have an odd shape. I want the class to think about, if you were a vegetable what kind of vegetable would you be? Remembering, like vegetables, we all are different. We all look different from each other. We all act different from each other. That makes us all unique! If we were all the same, life would be very boring. Some of you may like vegetables, some may not. But I bet we can find at least one vegetable if you could you would be like. Think about what you like vegetable you like to eat. Or you may just like the way it looks. You may like pumpkins because you get to carve them in the fall. So to start, if you were a vegetable what kind of vegetable would you be? I will start by saying if I were a vegetable; I would be a zucchini squash. I love fresh cooked zucchini and I also like cooking with zucchini, like making zucchini bread. You don't have to say why, but you can if you want. From the responses, make list from random participation and keep tally if vegetables are mentioned more than once. Activity: Class Class could decide to make vegetable soup, salad or even a pizza. The more and different kinds of vegetables would make i t better. Just like all types of students makes the classroom and school better. Each adds their own "spice" to mix. I think the salad would be a great idea. Students could bring a vegetable for the salad and it would be a salad buffet and they could build their own salads. Some of the students may have never t ried a certain vegetable, so it could be a great healthy learning experience. Some activities to think about and build on: Reading The class can be read and then can act out The Carrot Seed, by Ruth K raus. Other readings: The Gardner, The Garden of Happiness, The Surprise Garden, Growing Vegetable Soup Science Learn ab...
