342: History Africa and the West Time: Tues/Thurs: 3:00- 4:15. Place: Univ.Hall 317. Fall Semester 2008 Professor Ray E. Dumett Office: 026 Univ. Hall Hours: T/Th:10:30- 12:00 & 4:20-5:30. COURSE DESIGN Course Description: This course examines Africa s recent past and its relations with the Atlantic world from approximately 1500 to the present. Focusing on the themes of religions, political systems, the lure of wealth, migration of peoples, national rivalries and conflict, lectures will analyze traditional African civilizations and interactions with internal and external forces of change, including exploration, military conquest, slavery and the Atlantic commercial revolution. The Caribbean Islands of the West Indies are a particular focus of attention because they were crucibles for a synthesis of African, European and American cultural elements. The pros and cons of early anthropological studies, colonial rule and the Christian missionary influence in Africa and the West Indies also receive attention. The course culminates with a discussion of contemporary problems of nationalism, economic development and social change in Africa. Goals: Two goals of the course will be to develop an appreciation for the richness of the varied cultures and peoples of the African continent and to sharpen critical awareness of the complexities of its modern history. The course endeavors to acquaint students with several of the great religious traditions in Africa. On a regional basis West Africa and Central Africa receive the closest attention. Lectures and readings will emphasize the continuities between past and present and the ongoing challenges facing modern Africa. Assignments and Methods: The data base for this course derives from twice weekly lectures. In addition, textbook assignments and several supplementary library books augment the framework of lectures. There will be three examinations of equal weight. The last examination is not comprehensive, but will cover only the final one-third of the course. Essay questions comprise the major portion of exams; but short answer (identification and possible T/F multiple choice) questions plus map tests will also be included. To assist students with preparation for exams there will be several short quizzes and class reviews. Attendance and participation in class discussions is important. Consultation with the professor and teaching assistant is very much encouraged, especially in connection with the Term Paper. Grading: Letter grades will be awarded according to a point system:--1st exam 100 pts.; 2nd mid-term exam 100. Third exam 100 pts.; Two quizzes (@ 20 pts each) 40 points. There will be one Term Paper of from 10-12 pages, on topics of the student s choice, based on consultation with the professor. (100 points.) Good Attendance and participation in review discussions is worth up to 20 points. Total possible points for the course 460. Textbooks: Bohannan, Paul and Curtin, Phillip: Africa and Africans (Waveland, 4th edn. 1995). Refer to as B&C. Walvin, James, Atlas of Slavery (Pearson-Longman, Harlow, England and New York, 2006).
