OVERVIEW: In this lab, you are going to copy (not move!) your existing kernel and initrd files to a new location, and modify your menu.lst file appropriately to boot the newly created kernel. 1. Use root user privileges for this lab. 2. Create the directory /kernel (this is /kernel, NOT ~/kernel!) 3. Use the command uname -r to determine your current kernel version. _______________________ 4. Copy the files /boot/vmlinuz-kernelversion and /boot/initrd-kernelversion to the newly created /kernel directory. Make sure to copy the file starting vmlinuz, not vmlinux. Example: you could do this using command substitution: cp /boot/vmlinuz-`uname -r` /kernel
5. In the /kernel directory, create symbolic links named vmlinuz and initrd that point to the appropriate related file in the /kernel directory. 6. As a precaution, make a backup copy of your /boot/grub/menu.lst file, called /boot/grub/menu.lst.prelab17a. Open the original /boot/grub/menu.lst file for editing, and make the following changes. a. Duplicate the menu item stanza relevant to your current kernel, and set the title of the newly created stanza to the single word Lab17A. Do not modify the original stanza in any way. b. In the newly created menu item stanza, update the references to the kernel and initrd files, so that they refer to the newly created files /kernel/vmlinuz-kernelversion and /kernel/initrdkernelversion. You will need to update the references to the root partition and the absolute path as well. To c. the kernel command line, add the argument panic=42. (You may consult the bootparam(7) man page for more information, if you are curious). d. Set the bootloader password to cent253, using a plaintext (unencrypted) password. (If the bootloader already had a password, merely comment out the line specifying the original password). e. Comment out the gfxmenu entry. The gfxmenu does not work when a password is used. Save your changes. 7. Reboot your machine. At the GRUB menu, a. Select the newly created menu item, then enter "p" to enter the bootloader's password (cent253). b. Use "e" to open the newly added stanza (Lab17A) for editing. c. In the editor, append the argument Linux=fun to the kernel commandline, leaving all other arguments in place.
