201/202/203 SPAN Compositions: Information and General Guidelines Information Students will be required to write two compositions during the quarter. Two drafts of each composition are required. Due dates for each composition are on the course syllabus. No late work will be accepted. Themes and detailed instructions for each composition will be provided by instructors. For information on the grading criteria used in the evaluation of compositions, visit the portal and access the document titled "Composition Grading Criteria". General Guidelines Composition 1 is to be one-page long. Composition 2 will be two-pages long. Both first and final drafts must be composed on the computer (10 or 12 font, doublespaced, standard margins). Students should use a word processing program that produces Spanish characters. Students should use appropriate grammatical structures and vocabulary from the chapters recently covered in class. Do not write the composition in English and then attempt to translate it to Spanish. Begin with Spanish! The following process is useful: o a) brainstorm about ideas associated with the topic; o b) brainstorm on related vocabulary; o c) think about what grammatical structures are appropriate for the topic and situation (they will be ones recently studied in class); o d) organize collected ideas and vocabulary; o e) write a preliminary draft; o f) polish the draft, paying special attention to the criteria and descriptions listed on the composition grading sheet; o g) write a polished first version to be submitted to the instructor. The first draft you turn in should be written as though it were a final draft . Each version of the composition is worth 50% of the grade, and you must do both drafts to receive credit for the composition. Keep in mind University of Washington policies regarding academic honesty and plagiarism. All work submitted must be original. Violations of UW policies will not be tolerated. For information on UW policies and consequences of violation, see the document titled "Academic Honesty" (available on the course portal).
