Punctuality in posting to the discussion board and submitting assignments You must regularly log into the web site, check the course calendar for assignments, and promptly complete the work Educator keeps records of when you are online and when assignments are submitted. Minimum four times a week. You are expected to meet all deadlines for assignments and tasks. Late work is not accepted. I do not give extra credit for missed assignments or under any circumstances that is not documented. These circumstances would be hospitalization or a death in the family. Equipment failure is not an excuse for late work; have a back up plan. If you miss a total of three discussion board assignments before mid-term, you will be dropped from the course. Respect You are expected to treat me and your classmates respectfully in your correspondence and discussion. You are expected to be an active participant in the class discussion, posting on at least two different occasions during each unit. Reading your classmates' posts and responding thoughtfully show you respect your classmates' efforts and ideas. You are expected to notify me of concerns, questions, and problems. You are to conduct yourself on the discussion board as you would for any face-to-face class. Obscenity or inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated. No chain letters should be sent to classmates. Please do not forward jokes and other items that do not pertain to the course to your classmates. You will need to have at least two resources for Internet access in case of technology failure. For example, if you plan to use your home computer, you will need to know you can use a computer at your parents or at a library in case something happens to your own. . You must use at least one instant messaging program, either AOL Instant Messenger or Skype. You can download AOL Instant Messenger from http://www.aim.com and follow the directions provided at the site. Or you can download Skype from http://www.skype.com and follow the directions at that site. You will need a microphone for Skype. Finding Assignments You will be find course assignments in Course Documents. Click on Course Documents and a packet will appear. The documents will be available for downloading and printing. Please print each and every page. When you enter Educator you will see an announcement page with instructions from me. You are responsible to check the course due dates. Just because I do not remind or mention to you in class a due date does not mean that something isn't due. You are responsible to keep copies of your assignments. Any paper or assignment should be saved on disk, CD, or hard drive and then backed up. Save copies of e-mail messages sent to me or that I send you. Save assignments I return to you. Save copies of your notes and other drafts of your papers. You are responsible For all assignments that are given. To ask about your progress if you are unsure about how I am grading. Grades can be found at Assessments Grades. Check it regularly! Do not ask for extra credit or for the permission to complete assignments well after the due date to raise a grade. Please do not tell me the last week of class that you must pass the course. Be responsible for your progress throughout the semester. You are to responsible contact me by phone, e-mail, or during my office hours, if you have personal questions and concerns. I cannot know if you are having difficulty if you do not let me know. You are responsible for your academic progress. I do not give grades; you earn them. When I make an assignment, I give specific criteria that are available to you before you complete the assignment. If you are confused or unsure about these criteria, you must contact me in class, by phone, by e-mail, or in my office at least 24 hours before the assignment is due giving you a time frame that allows you to act upon my advice. (For example, a half hour before an assignment is due is not adequate time.) When I return an assignment, I give specific feedback based upon the assessment criteria given to you when the assignment is given. If you have questions about the way an assignment is graded, please contact me. Grades can be found at Assessments Grades. Check it regularly! Please report any discrepancies between my records and yours. I do not send grade reports. You must check your own academic progress at the course site. It is available 24/7. Assignments and Grading See packet at course site for details You will download each a Word or RTF document for each unit that will outline the requirements for each unit. You will then need to use the course site to post at the discussion board and to upload assignments. Grading is on a point system. Discussion Board: Practices all five outcomes of the course: identifying a representative example of American literature since1865; interpreting literature using symbols and metaphor; historicizing literary works; recognizing the diversity of American literature; and defining good literature. Gateway criteria for discussion board initial posts: Initial posts at the discussion board must be posted ON TIME and be at least 300 words, posted in the correct forum, spell checked and proof read before I will even read or give credit for the post. The post must answer all parts of the question. Gateway criteria for the 2 follow up posts: You must respond to 2 different classmates. The posts must be at least 150 words, be posted on time, spell checked and proof read before I even read or give credit for the post. The post must add to the conversation. I will evaluate the discussion board at mid-term and at the end of the course. At mid-term the discussion board will be worth 50 points and at the end of the course another 50. Written Assignments: Demonstrate all five outcomes. Gateway criteria for all written assignments: All written assignments must be uploaded at the Educator site and attached to the assignment.
