350g EALC Fall 2007 Questions for Discussion 10 (after midterm #4) Mongol Invasion, Life of Chinggis Khan, Yuan dynasty Birge 1. How does the life of Chinggis Khan (Temuchin) reflect the hardships of the steppe at that time and Mongol marriage practices? Completely nomadic very little rainfall, live completely off the herds, live in gers little tents, there is constant warfare between the tribes 2. How do the circumstances of Temuchin's early life and marriage suggest that he did not come from a wealthy, chieftain family? Chinngis khan's young life involved poverty and deprivation: fighting among selves, kills brother for a bird to eat, his mother was driven out by family when his father was poisoned. This proves that his family was poor. 3. What is a n kh r (plural n kh d),and what was their importance to the rise of Chinggis Khan? 4. What is a khurilai, and what is its significance for Mongol leadership and succession? 5. How are gender relations different for Mongols and for Chinese? Chinese: Dowry, foot binding, minor marriage major and marriage Mongol: three ways to get a wife 6. Why were the Mongols able to conquer so much of Eurasia? What innovations and cultural changes came about under the Yuan dynasty? Affirmative action with mongol quota in government. ethnic differentiation, laws government. scholars were exempt from labor tax, religious tolerance, painting, story telling, culture flourishing, incentives to go west. Universal vs particularism. 8. What are some of Khubilai's achievements? paper money, blue and white porcelain. Grand canal all the way to bejing, forbidden city.
