of University California, Berkeley Engineering 124 Professor Kastenberg Impacts of Technology on Society Engineering 124 Lecture 29 5/8/07 Final Exam Friday, May 11, 2007 @ 12:30 in 390 Hearts Mining Similar to the last couple homeworks Review o Epistemology of Technological Development o Wisdom Traditions o Greek Philosophy o Modernity, Philosophy & Ethics / Post Modernity o Integral Approaches o Professional Codes of Conduct o Risk, Utilitarianism o Eastern Cultures & Ethics o Roots of our Ecological Crisis o Complex Systems o Nuclear/Biotech/Nanotech/InfoTech/Global Warming 1. Compare and contrast western philosophical thought (Axial Age, Greek through the Modern Period), Western religious thought (Judaism Christianity, Islam) & Eastern (Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism) philosophical/religious thought with respect to the following: a. The ethical and moral relationships of human beings toward each other towards society at large b. Ethical and moral relationships of human beings towards the environment c. Interplay between technology, population growth, and hubris. Include the basis upon which these relationships are derived and constructed 2. List some of the technical and ethical issues associated with Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO's) and transgenic plants in agriculture. Describe how they relate to the notions of Micro-ethics, Meso-ethics and Macro-ethics. Explain how each of the following "ethical" theories might or might not influence our decision-making process with respect to these concerns: a. Rule and principle based ethics b. Situational or contextual based ethics c. "Care-based" ethics Rule and Principle based Ethics o Kantianism is a rule based Ethics, categorical imperative o Utilitarianism is a principle based ethics, on a case by case basis Situational and Contextual based ethics o Situational Utilitarianism o Contextual Kantianism "Care-based" o ethics Carla Gilligan Lecture 29 1 of 2 5/8/2007 Written By Raymond Leung University of California, Berkeley Engineering 124 Professor Kastenberg Impacts of Technology on Society 3. List some of the technical and ethical issues associated with the disposal of high-level radioactive waste. Considering all the ethical principles that were discussed in class, as well as the outside reading, construct an argument either for or against the proposed highlevel radioactive waste repository at Yucca Mountain Nevada. Your argument should be based on both ethical and technical considerations. Kantianism o Not good in one place, why is it good in another place o Nevadans as a means to an end without their consent Utilitarianism o Risk analysis o Putting in a remote place Always address the opposing argument too. 1. Compare and contrast the following using examples as appropriate: a. Complicated systems versus complex system b. Paradigm versus perspective c. Moral stage of development (pre-conventional, conventional and postconventional) versus world-views (ego-centric and world-centric) d. Rule based ethics versus situational or contextual based ethics Complicated System o Predictable behavior o Example: Car Engine Complex Systems o Unpredictable o Everything effects each other with surprising results o Emergent properties 2. Suppose you are planning to organize and moderate a debate regarding the future development of Nanotechnology. As organizer and moderator, you can choose the topicsfor the debate, as well as who will debate the issues. a. In order to begin the debate, you will make a statement as to the nature of nanoscale science and technology, and describe three major issues concerning ethics and the impacts of this technology on society and the environment. That three issues would you want to have debated and why? What would you say and why? Lecture 29 2 of 2 5/8/2007 Written By Raymond Leung
