on FILMSTRIPS Based excerpts from The Expert Educator (Jones, et al. , 1994) Description Filmstrips are made up of a series of still pictures placed in sequential order on 35mm film. Each individual picture is called a "frame." Filmstrips are usually between twelve and fifty frames in length. Advantages or Special Purposes 1. A wide variety of commercially-produced filmstrips is available. 2. The generally high production quality of filmstrips provides visual stimulation and motivates the learner. 3. Filmstrips are easily stored. A "mountain of knowledge" can be stored in a small container. 4. Filmstrip projectors are generally available to the teacher and are easy to operate. 5. Learners can use the filmstrip projector in making student presentations. 6. Pictures, diagrams, drawings, and charts can all be utilized on filmstrips. Disadvantages or Limitations 1. Home- made filmstrips are hard to make; thus the teacher generally has to rely upon commercially produced strips. 2. Commercially-produced filmstrips "structure" the lesson for the teacher. Filmstrips 3. are inflexible in making the presentation. 4. The "outdating" of a significant number of frames causes the entire filmstrip to become obsolete. 5. Commercially produced filmstrips do not always turn out to be exactly as described in the brochures. 6. The room must be darkened, affecting both instructor control and meaningful learner discussion. 7. In a darkened room, it is difficult for the instructor to read a script should one be included with the filmstrip. 8. Students cannot easily take notes in the dark. 9. Filmstrips do not show motion. Application 1. Preview the filmstrip to be sure it is in line with your obje...
