Text: Calculus with Differential Equations, Ninth Edition, by Varberg, Purcell, and Rigdon. It is important and expected that you read the text, especially the examples. The Course: We will cover the material of chapters 1-5. Chapter 0 will be reviewed over the first two days of class. Course Webpage: http://www.math.utah.edu/jeff/MATH1210 Fall2007.html Homework : There will be eleven homework assignments usually due on Fridays at the beginning of class. The assignments will cover material up to and including Wednesday's class. Students should work on the assignments daily in order to complete the homework on time. Late homework will not be accepted. Quizzes: There will be seven unannounced quizzes given in class. One may not make-up a missed quiz. The quizzes will be worth twenty points each. The total of the highest five quiz scores will determine your quiz grade. Exams: There will be two in class midterms announced at least one week in advance. The cumulative final exam will be Friday, December 14, 1:00-3:00 pm. Course Grade: Homework 25% Quizzes 10% Midterm I 20% Midterm II 20% Final Exam 25% Grades will be assigned according to a scale no stricter than: 93-100 A, 90-92 A-, 87-89 B+, 83-86 B, 80-82 B-, 77-79 C+, 73-76 C, 70-72 C-, 67-69 D+, 63-66 D, 60-62 D-, 59 E. Attendance: Absences permitted by the university attendance policy must be coordinated prior to the class period in order to make up the missed homework, quizzes, or exams. This coordination should be done in person.

A Note about Homework It is important that students practice what is learned in class on a regular basis. The assigned homework problems will not be sufficient practice. The odd numbered exercises have solutions beginning on page A-7 of the text. Each student should work the odd numbered exercises in addition to the problems assigned as homework. Homework assignments are given to gauge the student's understanding of the concepts presented during class. Students are required to show the work necessary to arrive at their answer. How one obtains an answer is at least as important as obtaining the correct answer. Students should to attempt complete the homework assignments independently. However, students are encouraged to discuss homework problems (and odd numbered problems) with others and even work in groups. A great way to learn mathematics is to explain the concepts to each other. Each student must submit a distinct homework paper consisting of their own work. Free tutoring resources are available for students in the T. Benny Rushing Mathematics Center (http://www.math.utah.edu/ugrad/tutoring.html). There will be eleven homework assignments during the semester. Ten of the homework assignments are due at the beginning of class on Fridays. One homework assignment will be due the Tuesday before the Thanksgiving break. Late homework will not be accepted. The ten highest homework scores will be used to determine your final homework average. Homework assignments will be announced in class and posted to the course webpage. Homework assignments make up 25% of your course grade. A Note about Quizzes There will be seven unannounced quizzes of which the five highest scores will count toward your final grade. These quizzes will be used to further gauge your understanding of the concepts. They will be given at the beginning of class and last approximately 15-20 minutes.
