of Examples Essays that Received a 10: 1. What was Madison's Dilemma? Answer 1: Madison's Dilemma pertained to controlling or keeping factions in check. Madison said that everyone is in pursuit of his or her own interests, and that factions will naturally form. In order to keep one faction from taking over the government or society, he argued that you could not take away liberty or instill virtue in the people to get rid of factions. Instead, Madison proposed that other factions will naturally form, and will provide competition among the factions. He also argued that this would be more effective over a larger population for more variety. Answer 2: Madison's Dilemma was outline in Federalist 10, and he envisioned factions forming and that these factions would be detrimental to the country. He envisioned two ways to deal with factions. First, you could stop them from forming in the first place, but at the cost of a great deal of liberty. You could also try and stop them from forming by instilling virtue among the citizenry, but this would be impossible. The second way to deal with factions would be to control their effects, and Madison sought federalism as one of the best ways to do this. He envisioned many groups forming--so many that one would not be able to dominate the others. A system of checks and balances and also federalism would help to control factions. Answer 3: Madison assumed that political factions would inevitably form in society because people will pursue their own self interests and gravitate toward groups that share the same interests as them. He feared that people would pursue their self interests even if doing so was detrimental to society. Madison's dilemma was the fact that factions could not be eliminated because then if the right to form factions was taken away from the public it would be limiting their political freedom. He also stated that instilling the same virtues in all people would not work to get rid of factions because everyone has different views and it's not possible to get them to have the same beliefs. Question 2: What is the unique power of government? Answer 1: The government has the power to use force over its citizens. It can control people and force them to do things they otherwise would not have. If the citizens refuse, the government has the power to citizens, punish and even put them to death in certain situations. Answer 2: The unique power of government is that no other formed group in society has the right to instill force. Except for government no one else can make taxes, or make children have an education. No company, no matter how much power, can enforce laws like the government. It has the ability to make people do things. A teacher can have someone stand-up with their power but can not have a student pay and entrance fee into the room. Only the government has the unique power of controlling citizens and their freedom. Answer 3: Government has the unique power or the ability to force people to do something they would not usually do. Some of these things may be to educate children, pay taxes, mandate required military service. The government also has the power to punish those who choose to disobey the government's regulations, by monetary fines, imprisonment, and/or the ultimate punishment of death. No other group has such authority. Question 3: Many young people only have cell phones. Most surveys don't call cell phones. What two conditions need to be in place for this to bias survey results in a significant fashion? Answer 1: In order for this to bias the survey results in a significant fashion, the number of people with only cell phones needs to be a significant amount and percentage of the population sample. If...
