University Husson School of Pharmacy Bulletin December 2009 Volume 2, Issue 3 Inaugural White Coat Ceremony Through the generous sponsorship of Walgreens, the White Coat Ceremony for the entering class of 2013 was held in Husson Universitys new Gracie Theater on Sunday, October 4. In front of invited family and guests, the first-year students received their white coat, signed a framed copy of the Oath of a Pharmacist to be prominently displayed in the School and for the first time recited the Oath in recognition of their passage into the profession as student pharmacists. All P1 students will be entering their first introductory pharmacy practice experience at various community sites during Hussons January term. The Guests of Honor included: Dr. William Beardsley, President and CEO of Husson University; Laurier Lamie, R.Ph., President of the Maine Pharmacy Association; Sabrina Palumbos, R.Ph., District Supervisor Special points of interest: William Miller addresses inaugural class at White Coat Ceremony P1 class and ASP students get involved Entering class demographics Hiring update for Walgreens; the 17 faculty and staff members of the School of Pharmacy; and William Miller, Owner of Miller Drug in Bangor and the keynote speaker for the event. Mr. Millers message on professionalism was particularly meaningful given his more than 40-year history in the pharmacy profession in the State of Maine. At the conclusion of the formal ceremony, a catered reception for the more than 300 in attendance was held in the Gracie Theater Foyer. Class of 2013 Meet our Newest Faculty Members First Year Class Gets Involved in Regional, State and Community Service Activities The School of Pharmacy is especially proud of how quickly the entering P1 class has become involved in both professional and community service activities. Fifty-eight students have joined the newly formed student chapter of the APhA/Academy of Student Pharmacists. Thirteen ASP students attended the Maine Pharmacy Association meeting at the Samoset Resort, October 16-18 and eight chapter members attended the Region I ASP midyear meeting in Hartford, CT on November 6-8. The student MPA membership drive is currently underway. ASP The chapter sponsored a campus-wide Write Love on Your Arms table on November 13 to raise awareness of depression, self-injury and suicide, and to provide information on available supportive services. Both the P1 class and ASP members collected non-perishable food items for donation to the Manna Project of Bangor to feed needy families over the Thanksgiving holiday and also raised $635 to purchase Christmas gifts for Adopt-A-Family.
