AMES, Iowa -- Iowa pork producers are invited to learn more about improving their swine production operation at one of the 2007 Iowa Pork Regional Conferences scheduled for late February. The Iowa Pork Industry Center (IPIC), Iowa Pork Producers Association, and Iowa State University (ISU) Extension are cosponsoring this annual series of five meetings at different sites around the state. The series is set for Feb. 19-23 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Fee for those preregistered at least two business days in advance is $20 per person, which includes the noon meal and materials. Walk-in registration is $30 per person. All fees are payable at the door. The conference brochure is available online at www.ipic.iastate.edu/information/Reg.Conf.Brochure.2007.pdf. Preregister by calling IPIC at (800) 808-7675 or (515) 294-4103. IPIC program specialist Colin Johnson said this year's conference series will educate swine producers on effective marketing strategies and new technological advances in swine production. The series will also provide information about onfarm diagnostic methods for preliminary health investigations and tactics used to minimize stress in handling swine. "Producers will hear from experts on how to manage production costs and identify market opportunities. There also will be great discussion about investigating PCVAD and associated disease," Johnson said. "You can choose to attend either the morning or afternoon session, or both. Lunch will be served at noon for all attendees." The morning session features topics specifically designed for the owner-operator or other decision maker of the operation. These speakers and their topics are Glen Ring of Glen Ring Enterprises, "How are Corn and Soybean Prices Affecting Livestock Markets?" Dr. Butch Baker of ISU College of Veterinary Medicine, "Managing PCVAD and Animal Health in Swine Systems," and local ISU Extension swine field specialists, "What is the Ideal Market Weight?" Afternoon speakers and topics are designed for growers and barn workers and focus on practical applications for optimal pig care. Baker, speaking on "Walking Pens to Ensure Individual Pig Care," will be joined by Elanco Animal Health representatives talking about, "Handling Stress During Loading and Transport." and regional swine veterinarians presenting, "Farm Necropsy." * Wednesday, Feb. 21, Ainsworth, Marr Park Conservation Center 2943 Hwy 92. Its mission is to promote efficient pork production technologies in Iowa, maintain Iowa's pork industry leadership and strengthen rural development efforts. IPIC focuses its efforts on programs that are integral and complementary to ISU Extension. Through IPIC, Iowa producers receive accurate and timely information to make their operations more efficient and profitable. -30Contacts : Colin Johnson, Iowa Pork Industry Center, (515) 294-2340, colinj@iastate.edu Sherry Hoyer, Iowa Pork Industry Center, (515) 294-4496, shoyer@iastate.edu ============================================================= == 2. This report features a variety of animal industry-related research done at Iowa State that was supported by the Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Station. Experiment Maynard Hogberg, chair of the ISU animal science department, said a variety of professionals conducted the research for this report, including ISU faculty, staff and graduate students; visiting scholars; ISU Extension county and field staff; and professors and collaborators from other universities. The report features research that relates to the beef, dairy, poultry, sheep, goat and swine industries in Iowa and covers topics such as improving production efficiencies, environmental quality, animal product quality and food safety, he said. "The report is organized by species and also has sections on animal products, the environment, and companion animals," he said. "These all are important aspects of keeping animal agriculture strong and viable, and contributing to Iowa's economy and quality of life.
