College Axia Material Appendix E Quoting, Summarizing, and Paraphrasing Sources Summarize: Be brief. Reflect key facts or ideas. Help readers understand context. Do not insert personal views. Write in your own words, except for quotations. This article is about gun related accidents that happen in Canada. Many Canadians blame the easy gun laws for the gun related accidents. This article claims that the repeal of gun registration would cause more suicides and gun related fatalities. Paradis, Gilles. "Gun control redux/Le controle des armes a feu: nouvel episode." Canadian Journal of Public Health 101.3 (2010): 192. General OneFile. Web. 25 July 2010. The use of guns and fire arms greatly increases the amount of violence. Due to weak fire arm control, Africa is affected by gun violence. Marsh, Nicholas. "Taming the tools of violence." Journal of Public Health Policy 28.4 (2007): 401+. Academic OneFile. Web. 25 July 2010 In frequently polarized "gun control" debates, people who want an outright ban on the personal possession of firearms oppose those who assert their right to own a gun for protection or lawful recreation. (Nicolas Marsh) Marsh, Nicholas. "Taming the tools of violence." of Journal Public Health Policy 28.4 (2007): 401+. Academic OneFile. Web. 25 July 2010 Paraphrase: Quote: Use details. Reflect the structure of the source. Reflect the ideas of the original author. Do not insert personal views. Write in your own words, except for quotations. Choose a well-stated key idea. Use a verb of attribution to introduce the quotation; for example, He claimed, She reported, they assert). Punctuate correctly. Cite in APA format. For these three sources, I had a different opinion about whether or not they were noteworthy. I felt the one that I had summarized was more of a description. If I was to use this source for my research paper, I would say it is not very noteworthy because it feels more of an opinion article. Yes, there some credibility and facts but I still find it com220r3 biased. The other two sources are more noteworthy, I do not necessarily agree with them, but they provide more facts and are not as biased. I decided to quote a source if there is a scientific fact or research statement. I will summarize if there is much information I can use but a lot more words than I need. I will paraphrase a source when I want to use a sentence, I will just change the words. com220r3
