Syllabus 1 Course Guitar Heroes: Personalities, Music and Nationalism in 20th Century Classical Guitar Music. Classroom: HECC 100 MUSC 200 532: Tues/Thurs. 11:10 -12:25 MUSC 200 533: Tues/Thurs. 3:55 5:10 Lecturer: Dr. Isaac Bustos Office: 406D Academic Building Office Hours: By appointment E-mail: ibustos@neo.tamu.edu Phone: 979-845-3355-Dept of Performance Studies Course Description: This course is designed to give the students exposure to the most important guitar personalities across the history of music with a special emphasis on 20th Century Guitarists. We will survey their importance through a musical and historical exploration of their playing styles, compositions and musical aesthetics. We will explore how the guitar has risen to its popularity as a concert-level instrument and we will develop the necessary musical skills in order to recognize an extra-ordinary performance from a below average performance based on objective observations. We will also examine the guitar as a cross-cultural instrument and its application and/or assimilation of music of other cultures. Course Objectives: 1. To create an appreciation of music(s) through the guitar. 2. Develop tools that will aid in the recognition of music(s) from different cultures on the guitar. 3. You will be able to give a concise description of the history of the guitar and music linking the social, historical and cultural aspects of its development. 4. You will be able to recognize the different stylistic musical periods as played in the instrument and become acquainted with relevant musical terms that are characteristic of each style. 5. You will be able to recognize a good performance from a below average performance and will be able to recognize how guitar technique has grown in quality, especially during the 20th and 21st centuries. Requirements: Quizzes: There will be 3 unannounced quizzes. There will be no make-ups for missed quizzes unless you let me know of your absence in advance or show proper documentation for your absence (please refer to the student handbook as to what constitutes an excused absence). (QUIZZES WILL NOT BE MADE UP FOR UNEXCUSED ABSENCES NO EXCEPTIONS) Exams: There will be two total exams: a midterm and final. Each exam will consist of two parts: A listening portion and a written portion. I will test you on terms, dates, personalities (composers/performers), compositions and historical significance. The final exam will not be cumulative and will only consist of material covered after the midterm. Listening: We will do most of the listening in class and it is from these sessions that you will learn the most. Prior to the exams, you will be given a list of compositions that you must familiarize yourselves with in order to do well. All of these will be put on reserve at: http://mediamatrix.tamu.edu for you to listen to at anytime and/or will be viewed via YouTube. Please remember that most of the music, if not all, will be unfamiliar to you. I recommend that you listen with as much frequency as you can and that you dedicate as much listening time as you can in order to be prepared for exams and quizzes. Listening portions while one of the most enjoyable parts of the course, can be the most challenging when it comes to recognizing and/or making intelligent observations during an exam. Due to the large number of students, the class will be conducted in a lecture-style format but will include interactive discussions. You can assume that All of the information given in class will be on the exams. Therefore, attendance is an essential part of the course if you want to receive a good grade. You will be required to attend one live classical guitar performance outside of class. The concert MUST be a classical guitar concert and no substitutions will be permitted.
