History HIS101 of Western Civilization Middle Ages to 1789 Lesson 2 Essay This assignment is worth 50 points. 1 of 1 Please type in the title of your Lesson 2 Essay and the date you submitted your assignment: Bibliographical Info Robin Hood, directed by Ridley Scott, takes place in 13th century England. Robin Hood, played by Russell Crowe, starts a revolt against the King of England. Teaming up with Robin and his band of marauders confront corruption in a local village and lead an uprising against the crown that will forever alter the balance of world power. Summary Robin Hood was thought to originally be an archer in the army of King Richard the Lionheart. The movie portrays the Holy Roman Empire and the church as corrupt. Comparison One of the early scenes in the movie is when Robin Hood encounters a dying Sir Walter Loxley. Sir Walter Loxley begs Robin Hood to return his sword to his father. Sir Walter Loxley wants the sword returned as a matter of honor. The scene I just described is similar to the historical events describe on page 263 of the textbook. The textbook talks about how the Crusades appealed to many sons seeking glory. Similar as in the movie, Sir Walter Loxley was dying at the end of a long Crusade and his dying is wish to have his sword returned to his father. Another similarity between the movie and the textbook is about how during the Third Crusade, King Richard the Lion-Hearted gets captured on his way home to England. According to the text book, the Kings mother, Eleanor, has to pay a Kings ransom to buy his freedom. This event is mentioned in the movie during an argument when the newly crowned king, King , yells at his mother about England having to pay four years revenue to buy his freedom. Talks about 4 years of revenue Evaluation The movie, Robin Hood, is a hard movie to keep historically accurate because there is minimal evidence supporting the actual existence of Robin Hood. However, Robin Hood was believed to have lived in the Thirteenth century so it is important for the movie to be accurately representative of this time period. A major part of the movie is how Robin Hood feels guilty about murdering Muslims while a part of King Richard The Lionhearts Crusades. weaknesses? Robin Hood Little John Sir Walter Loxley Marion Loxley King Richard the Lion-Hearted After 10 years as part of The Crusades, King Richard the Lion-Hearted is nearly bankrupt and is plundering towns along his way back to England. Sheriff of Nottingham
