Tutorials: Tues. and Thurs. 5-6 pm. Tutorial is an important component of the course: important ideas and examples will be discussed there. As much as the lectures focus on setting the language and elaborate on the theory, the tutorials will focus on computational aspects of the course; as such, many examples will be presented in the tutorials which can clarify the theoretical aspects of the course. 4. MARKING SCHEME: ten Problem sets % 15 two term tests: % 30 Daily pop quizzes: % 10 Final examination: % 45 % (at 1.5% each) June 21 and July 19, (15 % each) unknown number August examination period Note: Pop quizzes will be almost 10 min. long and will be administered during the lecture time, and they cover the material covered in the previous lecture and/or in the same day or a previous day tutorials. The purpose of the quiz is to encourage the preparedness of the students with the material, the Tutorial presentations as well as to ensure the attendance 1 2 in the lectures. As such, there will not be any make up quiz, nor there will be o center writing of the quiz. Due to the pop nature of the quiz, the total number of quizzes is unknown. Indeed a rule of thumb dictates that the quizzes will be given when the class seems to be distracted or having a low attendance. As such the weight of each quiz may end up being anywhere between half a percent to 1 or even 2 percent. At the beginning of the quiz the class will be asked to assume the exam mode, which means you are to sit far apart from each other, (with at least 1 seat apart,) and not to speak to one another during the quiz. Also due to the size of the class, and the short quiz duration, no questions will be allowed during the quiz. Any violation from these assumptions will be considered as attempt in cheating during the quiz. Term tests will be give 5:10 - 7:00 on the day of test, and the location is to be announced. There will be a lecture after each term test. 5. HOMEWORK: Problem sets are due weekly by the end of the week (Friday in the drop boxes in the Sid Smith MAC or during the Thursday lectures). The rst problem set will be posted shortly and will be due back May 27. Normally the problem sets will be posted two weeks in advance, so please begin thinking about a problem set while you are working on another one. Problem sets are composed of a number of routine questions to ensure understanding of fundamental the ideas (which are minimum required for survival in the course) and a number of explorative, and perhaps challenging questions. At this level students must use this opportunity to deepen their understanding of the course material by tackling the challenging questions. Even though you are encouraged to discuss the problem sets, according to universitys policies in academic dishonesty, you are strongly discouraged to copy someone elses solutions. Please be advised the markers are careful to detect any such attempts, and in case of detection your mark on the problem set will automatically be set to zero, and your name will enter the courses hall of fame! No lecture notes will be posted on the blackboard, and it is the students responsibility to take careful notes during the lectures, and in case of any discrepancies between the lectures and the textbook please consult your lecture notes. Any missing test (for medical reasons only, and with a medical certicate please) will be replaced by the Final exam and the other term tests marks, weighted appropriately. Please note that no arrangement can be made for missing a term test for the lack of preparedness because it defeats the purpose of the term test. Besides, we have sucient statistical data to claim there is a strong correlation between skipping a term test and failing the course. A list of suggested exercises will be posted, which are designed to highlight certain important ideas. However this list in only a suggestion for you to start practicing, and by no means this list should limit the scope and type of the test and exam questions. Also, please note that no solutions to these suggested questions will be posted, however tutorials are a valuable source of hints and explanations toward this set of questions. 3 To begin with read section 1.1 (linear Algebra review) and do exercises 1, 5, 9, 10, 14, 17-31 6.
