of University Alberta Faculty of Business Department of Marketing, Business Economics & Law Fall Term 2003 BUSINESS LAW 301 A2 Legal Foundations of the Canadian Economy Course Syllabus Instructor: Douglas Peterson Time: MWF 11:00 11:50 Class Room: Bus 1-5 Office: 3-30T Business Building Telephone: 492-7578 Fax: 492-3325 E-mail: doug.peterson@ualberta.ca Web Site: http://courses.bus.ualberta.ca/blaw301-peterson Office Hours: M/W/F 10:00 10:50 By Appointment COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is designed to give an introduction to, and an overview of, three major areas of law generally encountered in business and commercial law 1. Canadian Legal System 2. Contract 3. Tort. Law as an academic subject places somewhat different demands on a student than would be encountered in many other university courses. It requires that the student be able to communicate clearly and effectively even when dealing with fact situations in which there is not always a clear right or wrong answer. REQUIRED COURSE MATERIALS (1) Managing the Law, The Legal Aspects of Doing Business. 1st Edition, McInnes, Mitchell; Prentice Hall (2) Course Notes: Provided on the class website (3) Text Book website. www.pearsoned.ca/mcinnes includes a study guide section, Internet exercises, online glossary, and links to relevant websites. 1 EVALUATION Exam Midterm #1 Final Final Value 30% 30% 40% Date October 1, 2003 October 31, 2003 December 15, 2003 (9:00 a.m.) Chapters Covered Chapters 1, 2, 3 Chapters 4, 5, 6 Chapters 7, 10, 11, 12 Examinations: You will be graded this in course by means of your performance on three closed book examinations based on the material in the text and the material presented in the lectures. Your ability to understand factual situations and solve problems will be of primary importance in grading. Examinations will be a combination of multiple choice and true/false questions on the textbook, handouts and material covered in class. It is the responsibility of each student to ensure they have all the required material. Students are expected to write the examinations at the assigned times. Except in extenuating circumstances, no make-up exams will be given for missed midterms. If a student misses the mid-term examination due to illness (doctors note required) or other valid reason approved by the instructor, the weight of the mid-term will be added on to the final exam. If you must miss the final exam you can make arrangements to write a deferred final according to University Policy. Deferred final exams will be arranged with the professor according to the School of Business guidelines. Let me know if you have any questions. Grading: You will be graded according to University policy and will be graded only against other students in your section. It is my desire to be readily accessible to students. If you are having difficulty with any part of the course, please come and see me during the assigned office hours or by appointment. The best time to ask questions is after class. The best way to contact me is by email CONTENT OF THE COURSE Will follow the numerical order of the class text: 2
