First-Year Engineering Laboratory, Fall 2011 Custom E Source Course Book for the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering (electronic version only) Webpage Address http://campus.fsu.edu Course Goals The overall goal of this course is to generate and maintain interest in the engineering disciplines, in order to motivate students to become active learners, responsible students, and ethical engineering professionals. This course is intended to introduce students not only to the engineering disciplines, but also to the study of engineering here at the COE. Each student will learn what to expect from his/her studies as an engineering major, as well as what professors expect from him/her as a student in pursuit of a technical degree. Upon completion of this course, students should be able to define and distinguish between the six engineering disciplines offered for study here at the COE in order to make or confirm a decision regarding which field of study to enter. In addition, students will have gained useful information intended to help them successfully complete their engineering programs of choice. In addition, it is imperative that each student is fully aware of the Pre-Engineering requirements. They appear in the required textbook, on the College of Engineering webpage, in each updated campus bulletin, and will be presented in class. Instructional Objectives: By the end of the course, the successful student will be able to: a.i.1. a.i.2. a.i.3. a.i.4. a.i.5. a.i.6. a.i.7. a.i.8. a.i.9. a.i.10. Program Outcomes/ Student Learning Outcomes EGN-1004L Spring, 2012 Define engineering (the formal definition given by ABET). Identify activities common to all engineering disciplines Specify and define the (conventional) engineering disciplines. Identify activities specific to individual disciplines (technical areas). Identify and use strategies for effective written and verbal communication Function as an active team member. Identify and use strategies useful in engaging in life long learning Present and solve an engineering (or analytical) problem with an appropriate method and in an appropriate format. Student learning outcomes for students majoring in engineering may be found at http://www.eng.fsu.edu/outcomes Page 1of 3 FAMU-FSU College of Engineering EGN-1004L First-Year Engineering Laboratory Spring, 2012 Semester COURSE SYLLABUS Announcement of Exam Dates The midterm exam for this class will be given on the following dates: Section 1: February 7, 2012, 7:45 am Section 2: February 9, 2012, 7:45 am Students must take the midterm exam during the section in which they are registered. The date and time of the final exam will be announced. Attendance Policy: First week attendance is mandatory for FAMU students. First day attendance is mandatory for FSU students. Class attendance will be taken each session and factored into your final grade under the category of Assignments/Class participation. Students will not be penalized, for attendance purposes, for excused absences and for one unexcused absences. Students with five or more unexcused absences will result in you receiving a failing (i.e. F) grade in this course. Students with excessive excused absences may be assigned a grade of incomplete I and be asked to submit missing work at a later time. Assignments All assignments will be submitted electronically (upload either Microsoft Word document or Adobe PDF only) unless otherwise specified. Each assignment must include the students official name (as it appears on the course roster), the section number, and the date in the upper right corner of the document. Electronic submissions will be accepted on Blackboard only. Students will be allowed to exclude one homework assignment (not more than 10 points) from their final grade consideration. Each student is responsible for completing each assignment, regardless of registration date (any student who registered late for the class must still complete missed homework assignments and submit them at the discretion of the professor). A soft copy of all assignments should be saved on each students flash drive, which should be kept with each student at all times. Each assignment will be due on Blackboard, in the Assignments folder, by 10:00 pm, one week plus one day after it is assigned, unless otherwise noted. A SafeAssign folder will be provided for you for each assignment. Do not email assignments to the instructor either or of the teaching assistants. Assignments not submitted on Blackboard will receive a grade of 0. Make-up Assignments Policy A make-up examination may be granted to students with a valid excused absence. However, you must notify me in advance if your absence involves a planned event or observance of a religious holy day. If an emergency prevents you from attending a scheduled examination, you must notify me at your earliest opportunity. You must obtain a valid excused absence for the emergency to be eligible for a make-up examination. Students with a valid excused absence will not be arbitrarily penalized for missing an assignment. Students without a valid excused absence are not entitled to a make-up examination. However, certain class assignments may be accepted late, with penalty, without a valid excused absence at the instructors discretion. Course Drop/Withdrawal Deadlines The seventh week drop deadline is Friday, February 17, 2012. The first examination will be returned to you on or before the seventh week drop deadline.
