Exercise Self-Assessment 1. How did your score compare to how you thought you might have scored before you
completed this questionnaire? Were you surprised by scoring higher or lower than expected? When taking this self-assessment, I scored 36/40. I was not surprised to score high on emotional intelligence, I believe I have the ability to recognize, regulate, and influencing emotions. Greenberg splits up Emotional Intelligence (EI) into four forms; self-awareness, social awareness, self-management, and relationship management (Greenberg, 2010). There have been times during missions where we have been awake for a very long time, where I had to display confidence and recognize how my crew is feeling to make a decision. I will attempt not to show any negative emotions and display a positive presence at all times. 2. Do you think you are higher or lower than most other people when it comes to emotional
intelligence? This is hard to answer; I like to think that I am in the `middle' when it comes to emotional intelligence. My fianc for example has a harder time to hide his emotions in comparison to me, however I know other people who have no problem with this at all. With myself, I keep my emotions `in check' at most times, but there will be times where they get the best of me, while I will always try to keep that to myself. 3. What might you be able to do to raise your level of emotional intelligence? How effective
do you think this might be? I do not have a hard time controlling my own emotions. Perhaps I could focus more on recognizing other people's emotions. However I also believe it is not realistic to assume everyone can keep their emotions in check at all times, everyone will have a bad morning where they are in a bad mood or where a situation gets the best of them. When dealing with work
situations I believe it is most important to keep a happy expression and positive outlook, even if you do not feel like this at that moment.
Consultant Exercise

Assuming that the employees' emotions and moods are negative, what problems would you
expect to find in their work environment?
When emotions and moods (morale) is low in the employees work environment, there can be multiple factors. There could be a lack of procedural justice "people's perceptions of the fairness of the procedures used to determine the outcomes they (Greenberg, receive" 2010). This simply means they do not receive the recognition they believe they should for their work. There could be a lack of emotional involvement, or room to express these emotions, which can cause the employees to bottle up all frustrations without means of talking about them. This is a big contribution to stress, in work environments. This can be about low salary, career advancement and no control on their career paths. This is why it is very important that management is aware of how their employees are feeling in their organization. 2. After completing the self-assessment exercise on emotional intelligence and learning about this subject matter, how should the company's supervisors behave differently so as to get their subordinates to have a more positive experience at work? Once a company is set in their ways it can be hard to change their way of thinking, however when this is a big problem in their organization they will need to adjust or attract new management. It will be important for the company to connect with their employees on a more
emotional level, and listen to what they have to say. Their input could be valuable and contribute to the continued success of the company. For example if the manager always keeps his door open for employees to consult the manager with any issues they might have. Once morale has improved management can keep this level of emotional happiness continue by giving recognition to their accomplishments.

What organizational stress management techniques would you suggest for this company?
More than half of today's larger companies have a wellness program in place. Greenberg writes "these are systematic efforts to train employees in a variety of things they can do to promote healthy lifestyles" (Greenberg, 2010). This can be several different workshops targeted at several issues such as; exercise, nutrition, and weight-management counseling. There are also other programs the company can turn to, such as meditation and relaxation, which makes employees less adversely affected by stress. Even though it seems unlikely that companies will use these, about one quarter of the companies out there are applying these techniques to reduce the stress of their employees.
