Should What You Bring? Your Midterm! What Should You Know By Now? A pen Your textbook (You can use it on the short answer portion) A blue book (Don't know what that is? Ask them at the bookstore. I will not have any blue books. If you choose to buy a lot of blue books and sell them to your irresponsible classmates for a 200% profit, I will not see anything wrong with that. If you do not have a blue book and no one will sell you one, you will have to use valuable test time to go and buy one. I will not extend your time. I do not give makeup midterms. Lots of people seem to need to take cousins in Miami to the emergency room on midterm day. That is a sad story, but not a university excused absence. Some NonNegotiable Ground Rules Everyone should be done with his or her midterm by the end of class time. If you get to class late, you'll just have less time to take your test. You must follow the directions I will write both on the top of your test and on the board. It is not hard to circle letters on paper. If you cannot complete this task, I'm not sure you deserve to pass. You may only use your textbook for the written portion of the exam. If you use it for the matching/multiple choice, you are cheating and will receive a zero. If I see you fondling your phone I will assume you're trying to Google the answers. I will not believe you when you say you were "just" texting. You will receive a zero. Study Guide: Twentyfive points on your midterm will come from the matching section where you will match the story to literary the movement. So, have you: Looked at your syllabus lately? You are responsible for being able to group stories into the correct movement, modernism, Gothic, American Gothic, realism, etc. Another twentyfive points on your midterm will come from plot points in the stories we've read and/or class discussion we've had about literary movements. So, have you: Read every story that's been assigned to you? Brushed up on the principles of modernism, realism, etc that I posted in your "Course Documents" folder on Blackboard? Been paying attention to, participating in, and taking notes on class discussion? The final fifty points for your midterm will come from the short answer section. You will pick two questions from a list of four and answer them in at least two fivesentence paragraphs. You must use specific examples from the story(ies) to support your answers. So, have you: Really looked at the principles of modernism, realism, etc. that I posted in your "Course Document" on Blackboard? Could you name them without looking? Been participating in, paying attention to, taking notes on class discussion? Do you know the differences between the Gothics? Do you know their similarities? Do you know, for example, how Charlotte Perkins Gilman and Kate Chopin were trying to manipulate the gothic form to prove a point? No really, are you sure you know what the modernists were all about? Do you know the differences/similarities between realism and modernism? If you know this stuff, you'll be fine. Good luck!
