The main difference between Arabs and Muslims is basically religion and ethnicity.
Muslims are a religious group (believing in Islam), while Arabs are considered to be an ethnic
group (Schaefer, 2006). After the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States, Arabs and
Muslims became targets of racial profiling, and all immigrants were required to report to the
Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services to be fingerprinted, photographed, and
interviewed (Schaefer, 2006). Many of these immigrants are detained and deported, which only
introduced more intolerance and fear to U.S. citizens. The Justice Department is now
questioning the legal grounds for the unfair treatment of Muslims and Arabs.
Orientalism is the simplistic view of the people and history of the Orient, with no
recognition of change over time or the diversity within its many cultures (Schaefer, 2006). Two
characteristics of Orientalism are: 1) the discounting of the diversity of ethnic and religious
groups, 2) not recognizing change within these groups over time. In the case of Arab and
Muslim Orientalism societies, has caused the two groups (one being religious and one being
ethnic) to begin to unite
Orientalism and prejudice contribute to hate crimes against Muslims and Arabs because
they are not considered separate from the terrorists that attacked the U.S. and continue to attack
other parts of the world. These two groups are considered to have the same extreme beliefs as
terrorists, because other races are not educated on the differences between the many ethnic
groups and religious groups in North Africa and the Middle East.
Once again racial stereotypes, prejudice, and Orientalism can be counteracted with
education. I have to admit that I was and still am quite ignorant to the many different groups and
religions in many parts of the world, including those I am discussing today. The more I learn
about the differences between these groups, the more I realize that I am one of the people that
considered most of them to be the same. It is quite amazing to find out how different they really
are.
