RESPONSIBILITIES E190 PROFESSIONAL OF ENGINEERS (Winter Quarter 2012) Introductory Course Information 1. SmartSite: Please refer to the Course Site on SmartSite for additional information attached as files. 2. First Lecture : The first lecture is at 4:40 p.m. on Tuesday, January 10, 2012, in Giedt 1001. It is very important to attend this first lecture, as well as all the lectures. I will give a model verbal presentation during the first lecture, and set out all the information you will need to give your own verbal presentation. If you absolutely cannot make this first lecture, please let me know by reply email (jfgisla@surewest.net), and then touch base with a student who does attend in order to get all of the important information. 3. First Section Meetings: The Section meetings will begin on Wednesday, January 18th (Sections 4, 5 & 6). Sections 7, 8, 9 & 10 will meet for the first time on Friday, January 20th. Sections 1, 2 & 3 will meet for the first time on Monday, January 23rd. The TAs will email you with the first verbal presentation assignments. 4. Wait List: We give first priority to graduating seniors who need E190 this quarter in order to graduate. You must work directly with the Head TA, Camille Metzinger (cnmetzinger@ucdavis.edu), to get into a Section if you are on the Wait List. In the meantime, please attend all the lectures, and all the Section meetings for your Wait List Section. We expect that everyone who wants will be able to register for E190 winter quarter. 5. TAs: The TA assignments are as follows: Camille Metzinger (cnmetzinger @ucdavis.edu): Sections 6, 8, 9 & 10. Nadia Richards (norichards@ucdavis.edu): Sections 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 & 7. 6. Verbal Presentations: a. If emergency an comes up and you cannot give your verbal presentation when scheduled, please email your TA at least one week before your scheduled presentation so that another student can be assigned. Three students must give their presentations in each Section meeting in order to complete all presentations by the end of the quarter. A student who fails to give his/her presentation when scheduled will have 10 points deducted if he/she does not have a good reason. b. Part B of the Course Materials that you will purchase in the Bookstore gives some helpful information about the verbal presentations. Focus on the following: (1) Be convincing; (2) Be enthusiastic; and (3) Adapt the technical aspects of the presentation to your audience. c. Some sample presentation topics are: Convince a company to fund research in (e.g. biorobotics) Convince investors to invest in a company that is developing (e.g. a global traffic network) Convince a consumer group to purchase or endorse (e.g. hybrid car; flourescent light bulbs, etc.) Convince your company CEO to continue funding your research project Convince a company to purchase (e.g. composite materials) Convince computer designers to use your new chip Convince an aircraft manufacturing company to use your new guidance system d. Your presentation will be video recorded, and you will view the video and give a self-critique. Failure to submit a self-critique will result in the loss of 5 points. e. A verbal presentation grading sheet is in Part B of the Course Materials. f. The three rules for giving a good presentation: Rehearse; Rehearse; Rehearse I very much look forward to introducing you to the profession of engineering. Professor Gisla
