Assignment #1
You are expected to work on this assignment prior to your tutorial in the
week of January 16th. You may ask questions about this assignment in that
tutorial.
In your tutorial in the week of January 23th you will be asked to write a
quiz based on this assignment and/or related material from the lectures and
textbook readings.

PROBLEMS: You should be able to nd solutions to all questions from
the book posted below. You do not need to submit this assignment, but you
should use it as a guideline to you let know what type of questions from the
book are good for practicing. You may try more questions if you like.
1. You should write and bring to your tutorial in the week of January 16th
the denitions of the following terms: Euclidean n-space, a vector, a
linear combination, a span of vectors, the magnitude of a vector, the
dot product of two vectors.
2. You should be able to list and prove all the properties of vector algebra.
You should be able to list all the properties of the norm in Rn . You
should be able to nd the angle between two vectors.
3. Section 1.1: # 4, 6, 10, 11, 15, 16, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 28, 29, 30, 32, 33,
34, 35, 36, 37, 39.
