Advertising: Keeping Sexism Alive by Cathleen McBride summarizes Gloria
Steinems article Sex, Lies and Advertising in her own words, maintaining a neutral
stance and hitting all the key aspects to summarizing and responding to a text. In the
excerpt McBrides techniques of responding to article are very similar to the way I would
write my summaries and responses. Starting off with reviewing the summary she uses her
own experience as an example. In her response she was never timid to reflect on the
summary with examples from well-known stars and events. McBride starts off with a
clearly stated thesis of Steinems article, making her stance precise and crisp. The reader
is always is looking to focus on writers viewpoint and side they take. Next McBride
briefly summarizes the article Sex, Lies, and Advertising, sticking to her stance and
moving on. After the summary she quickly ties in her personal to experience let you
connect with the reading and essentially backs up her arguments with illustrative
examples. Her stance never goes of track and all her examples are very strong supporters
of her thesis. The details and stand points she takes are very well organized throughout
the whole essay and caps it of with an analogy to allow the reader to grasp her thoughts.
McBrides was cleaver in her ways of giving examples of her own life then showing how
the were very similar to the way it was on mainstream media. She was able to recognize
women rights benefits while still taking her stance on the media negative influence on it.
I enjoyed the excerpt by McBride the flow made it easy to read and all of her
examples. Her personal experiences caught my eye as a reader, something I try to
achieve when writing. Her summary response is an example to use, nothing seems to be
off tempo and her argument opened my eyes up to a new opinion.
