of Analysis the Logic of an Article The Logic of Is Google Making Us Stupid 1. The main purpose of this article is: (State as accurately as possible the authors purpose for writing the article.) The main purpose of this article is to show how reading habits has changed since the invention of Internet and Google searches. 2. The key question that the author is addressing is: (Figure out the key question in the mind of the author when he/she wrote the article.) Since Google is introduced to human, does it help or affect the users? 3. The most important information in this article is: (Figure out the facts, experiences, data the author is using to support his/her conclusions.) The author mentions that readers go online and skim through articles instead of reading them carefully in the printed version. Instead of spending days in the library to gather information for their paper, most writers go online to get the information in just minutes instead. Carr also compare humans brain function the same as mechanical clock. Google search engine carries out thousands of experiment a day with a lot of ads for the users to view while they are using Google. 4. The main inferences/conclusions in this article are: (Identify the key conclusions the author comes to and presents in the article.) The main conclusion in the article is that Carr thinks Google is somehow affecting its users. 5. The key concept(s) we need to understand in this article is (are): (Figure out the most important ideas you would have to understand in order to understand the authors line of reasoning.) The key concept we need to understand in this article is how the Internet and Google has affected readers and writers. In the article, author provided a lot of evidences to prove the effect of the Internet and technologies to users. By these concepts, the author means: By these concepts, the author means that Google and the Internet have a negative effect to readers in some form, whether it is for information or just on-line surfing. 6. The main assumption(s) underlying the authors thinking is (are): (Figure out what the author is taking for granted [that might be questioned].) The main assumption underlying the authors thinking is that technology has change the way we reads. 7a. If we take this line of reasoning seriously, the implications are: (What consequences are likely to follow if people take authors the reasoning seriously?) If we take this line of reasoning seriously, the implications are that we would stop depending on technology too much. We would start to read books and newspaper in printed form again and spend less time on-line to for searching information that can be found in books. 7b. If we fail to take this line of reasoning seriously, the implications are: (What consequences are likely to follow if people ignore the authors reasoning?) If we fail to take this line of reasoning seriously, the implications are continuous reading of on-line newspaper and using the search engine. Be lazy by just relying on information available on the web. People will stop reading printed newspapers and maybe there will be no more lengthy articles or books in future. 8. The main point(s) of view presented in this article is (are): (What is the author looking at, and how is he/she seeing it?) The author tries to look for how moderns technologies effect the users and found out that in a way it help users, but in other way it effect users. It makes users want to avoid reading in a traditional style. Now most of users cannot read lengthy article, because they are starting to lose attention and interest to the article after reading 2-3 pages. Most of the readers find that reading is a skimming activity while they are on-line. 9. Your Opinion: Write a paragraph that states what you agree with and disagree with from the article and WHY you feel that way. Being specific counts; being vague does not. I agree with Carr, technology affect us in many different ways. Since I started to use the computer to research online, I am starting to get lazy while reading. After read a couple paragraphs, I feel bored and will click on another article or find a new topic. I like to skim online and scan for information. With the improvement of technologies today, I prefer not to read books in print anymore. When I need information to support my papers, I go on-line and search for it. I see that I am too dependent on technologies. This is our habit and I believe we can change it. But I do not blame this problem on Google or any other search engine, because this is the decision of the user to whether choose to read a book or skim through it. We tend to choose the decisions that would let us save time. Therefore we end up choosing to skim through article instead of reading it.
