This was a derogatory name given to Northerners who moved South during the Reconstruction Era and developed political and economic connections within the area. Answer Selected Answer: Correct Answer: Response Feedback: Question 16 29 out of 30 points Describe how Reconstruction was brought to an end by white terror and the Compromise of 1877. Had the process of Reconstruction been effective? Why, or why not? Answer Selected Answer: minds of the people and to drive away potential voters who favored Republicans and Reconstructionists. A number of political assassinations, including Republican organizer, George Ashburn, served to send a message that white southerners would not tolerate those supporters of equal rights for Blacks or what they considered a corrupt political party. Over the following months Klan-inspired violence spread throughout Georgia's Black Belt and into the northwestern corner of the state. Most Klan action was designed to intimidate black voters and white supporters of the Republican Party (Bryant). At times, Klansmen dressed in costumes and galloped around causing a commotion in the streets and scaring citizens. But other times they made physical threats against their opponents, ranging from whippings of black women perceived as insolent to the assassination of Republican leaders (Bryant). These acts were neither random nor rare as the Klan gained momentum by becoming more and more as organized a political organization. In 1868 alone, 336 cases of murder or assault with intent to kill were reported by the Freedmens Bureau across the state (Bryant). The Klan took the terrorism all the way to the polling places where they intimidated not only voters but federal soldiers stationed at the polls acknowledge Rutherford B. Hayes as President, but only on the understanding that Republicans would meet four demands: the removal of federal troops from the South, the appointment of a Democrat to the administration, industrialization of southern states and the construction of another transcontinental railroad through the South. Of these demands, removing federal troops put an effective end to Reconstruction. In essence, part of the compromise was that with Hayes election, Reconstruction in the South would end, allowing Southern Democrats to regain political control and reinstate white prerogatives. This ushered in the Jim Crow era of segregation and slowed, if not halted progress for equality for a time. Correct Answer: reasons. Besides political threats and intimidation, the Klan burned Black churches and schools, trying to change social behavior as well. But in this regard, Black people fought back both by rebuilding their churches and schools, but also by actually shooting back during attacks on their communities. Emancipation had given Southern Blacks independence to worship and appreciate their own cultures and these attacks could not take that away from them. References: Faragher, J. M., Buhle, M. J., Czitrom, D., & Armitage, S.H. (2009). many: A history of the American people River, NJ: Prentice Hall. Bryant, J. M. (2002, October 3). Ku Klux Klan in the Reconstruction Era. In The New Georgia Encyclopedia History and Archaeology February 23, 2012 [None] Response Rolando, The newly freed people were literally sold down the river (an Feedback: expression from slave days) by the Compromise and the Democratic party at this time. White terrorism, poll taxes, literacy tests, and the withdraw of Federal Support left those who had been enslaved to fend for themselves with little to no defense and the legacy of that time persisted at least until the 1960s and I would argue onward into the present. You've done well to talk about the specific ways in which the people were again abandoned by their government. Do remember your APA in-text citations as you write. Good work on this answer. Question 17 30 out of 30 points Discuss the original purposes of the Freedmans Bureau and the goals of the planned enlargement of the program by Congress. Evaluate how successful it was in helping the Reconstruction efforts. Answer Selected Answer: freed black Americans. the Reconstruction the U.S. Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands, established by Congress to provide practical aid to 4,000,000 newly freed Americans to expand the program to provide the same opportunities for the black Americans in terms of education, civil rights, and distribution of land. opportunities to those affected by slavery. were in $400,000 spent to establish teacher-training institutions. All major black colleges were either founded by, or received aid from, the bureau. failure of the program can be contributed to poor organization, lack of continuing funds, and lack of support from Congress. provide and establish equal opportunities. It is amazing to think how things could have progressed more quickly had the plan stayed intact and developed like it was originally planned to do. References: Faragher, J. M., Buhle, M. J., Czitrom, D., & Armitage, S.H. (2009). many: A history of the American people River, NJ: Prentice Hall. http://freedmensbureau.com/ Correct Answer: [None] Response This is good work. The original purpose of the Freedmens Bureau was to Feedback: re-connect families of those newly freed people after the Civil War and to help those same people get the skills they needed to start their lives anew as they worked towards full-citizenship, this of course meant educations, jobs training, and citizenship skills of all kinds. You do well to point much of this out in your answer. The success of the Freedmens Bureau is only as successful as the funding and the conversion of hearts of the local people so it varied by group and region. In some places there was greater success but in most when the funding wasnt there and whites goodwill ran out and federal protections werent present the programs became increasing less effective. Nice job on this answer. Friday, March 30, 2012 9:01:46 AM CDT
