Objec&ve: to allow students to demonstrate
applica1on of HFE Design Philosophies
HFE Design Philosophies:
Systems need to be designed for and to work with
people
Systems must be designed to accommodate a broad
range of users
How systems are designed will inuence human
behavior and therefore system performance
Design needs to be evidence-
based, not common
sense or designer driven
All design must take into account the system of use
Design Project Instruc1ons
Students must iden1fy 5 HFE designs (3 of
which must be bad HFE designs)

The 5 HFE designs must be comprised of:
1 product

Design Project Instruc1ons
Of the 3 bad designs chosen for redesign:
1 must iden1fy cogni1ve ergonomic design problems
1st part of the course
1 must iden1fy physical ergonomic design problems
2nd part of the course
1 must iden1fy macro ergonomic design problems
3rd part of the course
**Note there can be more than one type of ergonomic problem in
the chosen design.**
For design each iden1ed, students must follow the
template provided
Must use cita1ons for referenced HFE principles:
(Human Factors Principle, Book/Lecture Reference)
Ci1ng Properly / Plagiarism
You MUST cite any1me you use informa1on from
another source (e.g., books, lecture, lab, the web)

If you must take a picture, video or recording
from the web, cite it precisely (list the complete
url) and make sure the url you cite is func1onal
for me to reference
Do not take any picture or design ideas o any
websites that discuss good or bad designs such
as www.baddesigns.com
Design Project Template & Example
Follow template exactly
Use example as a guide
If you choose to use a smoke detector as a
design make sure you go above and beyond
the example (I prefer students NOT to use the
smoke detector)
Choose bad designs that violate at least three
principles
Must list all principles that are violated and/or
followed whether it is a good or bad design
