Unit BIO-202 4 Lab Report STEP 1: Microscopic Anatomy of Lymphatic Structures Observations: Describe the structures you observed on the slide of Reticular Connective Tissue Slide (Lymph Node) It looks like to me that the cells are very tightly connected forming what looks like a string. Describe the structures you observed on the slide of the spleen looks like It has large cells and lots of small chained cells surrounding it and the macrophage Is clumping to the red cells. Describe the structures you observed on the slide of the tonsil This slide shows a lot of different little features within the cells. there are big cells and little cells in the center of the big ones. It shows metaphase happening in these cells. Describe the structures you observed on the slide of the thymus This slide looks like it is separated by large sections and the cells look like slices of liver and surrounding all of them are little white cells that looks like adipose tissue. Questions: A. What are the two major functions of the lymph nodes? It filters the blood in the body and helps activate the Immune system. B. What are the major functions of the spleen? It destroys unneeded the red blood cells and holds a reservoir of blood. C. What is the function of the tonsils? participate in systemic immune defense and that helps fight against ingested pathogens D. What are the structural similarities found in lymph nodes, spleen and tonsils? They all are rounded organs and have a capsule with Internal lymphoid cells. they are placed about the body in order to filter air, blood, and lymph throughout the body properly. Step 2: Immunity and the Immune Response Observations: Describe what happened to the red and green food coloring after 45 minutes: Which sera was an antigen in section 2 of the dish? Describe what you observed in section 2 of the dish. Which sera was the antigen in the unknown sample used in section 3 of the dish? Describe what you observed in section 3 of the dish. Questions: A. Explain what is meant by memory as a characteristic of the immune response. B. How does our immune response distinguish between our own cells and foreign invaders (be specifc)? C. What are lymphocytes and where are they produced? D. Distinguish between an antigen and an antibody. E. Why is the term immune system a misnomer?
