EARLY CHILDHOOD Chapter 7---PHYSICAL AND COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT Physical development and health ---growth, motor skills, sensory systems, nutrition, self care and demographic concerns) Cognitive development/information processing and memory : intelligence--assessment and the nature/nurture debate, Piaget and preperational thinking, memory development, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, Lev Vygotsky, language development, moral development ---Piaget and Kohlberg. Chapter 8---EMOTIONAL AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT Emotional developmentincluding parental influence, timing & sequence, relationship to play, self-regulation and emotional understanding. Self awareness---- sense of self, self esteem, gifted children Gender identity----acquisition of gender identity, hormones, social influences, theoretical perspectives, role of parents. Family influences----cultural standards and trends, determinants, parenting styles and practices, Baumrinds theory of parenting, sibling relationships. Nonfamilial influences---peers and friendship, peers and modeling, childhood aggression, preschools and Headstart, role of the media. MIDDLE CHILDHOOD Chapter 9---PHYSICAL AND COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT Physical development: growth/body changes and motor development, brain development, health fitness. and Cognitive development: information processing, language, assessment of intelligence, learning disabilities, effective schools, conservation, creativity (see box). Moral development; cognitive learning theory, cognitive developmental theory, moral conduct, prosocial behavior. Chapter 10---EMOTIONAL AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT Self understanding: Eriksons perspective, self esteem, self image, self regulation, emotional coping. Family influences: parents, siblings, divorce, single-parent families, stepfamilies. Broader social environment: peers, gender issues, poularity, race and prejudice. Schools: developmental functions, student motivation, performance and social class. ADOLESCENCE Chapter 11---PHYSICAL AND COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT Physical development: signs of puberty in boys and girls, hormonal changes, early vs. late maturation, self-image and appearance. Health: nutrition, smoking, alcohol, sexually transmitted diseases, teenage pregnancy, body art and tattooing Cognitive development: Piagetformal operations, egocentricity, education. Moral development: adolescent as moral philosopher, political thinking. Chapter 12---EMOTIONAL AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT Identitiy development: G. Stanley Hall, Erikson and the Crisis of adolescence, Sullivan, culture. Peers and family contexts Courtship, love and sexuality: love and courtship, sexual orientation, sexual behaviors and attitudes, teenage pregnancy Career development/vocational choice Risky behaviors: drinking, drug abuse, suicide, delinquency.
