Results To get comparative data for both experiments, the colonies on the plates were counted. This data is then shown in bar graphs for a qualitative projections and tables for quantitative projections. The bar graph shows the comparative quantities between all the different groups being tested while the table confirms it numerically. In experiment 1, there is very little variance among all the different groups in most of the different bacterial strains seen in the graph, specifically in strains TA 98 and TA 100 Salmonella. The positive control consistently shows high quantities of surviving bacteria while the negative control showed consistently little survival. Popcorn in most of the strains appeared to be the best candidate for further investigation, as it had the second highest colony count. Numerically, popcorn and sodium azide were the only groups that were more than twice the negative control (water) in only strains TA 1535, TA 1537, and TA 1538. Popcorn has 5, 12, and 9 colonies for strains TA 1535, TA 1537, and TA 1538 respectively. sodium azide has 12, 7, and 7 colonies for strains TA 1535, TA 1537, and TA 1538 respectively. These are double the quantities of water in these strains, with 2, 6, and 4 colonies for strains TA 1535, TA 1537, and TA 1538 respectively. Thus, popcorn expresses similar data to sodium azide overall in experiment 1. The bar graph of experiment 2 shows high colony count for the negative control, sodium azide for TA 1535, however very little survival is shown in TA 1538, much similar to the results in the negative control. From the table, there were 541 colonies in TA 1535 and 9 in TA 1538. Another notable difference seen in the bar graph is the high colony count of the higher concentration of popcorn, which confirms the results from experiment 1. Popcorn in these two groups is well over double the quantity found in the negative control group. Another observation from the graph is that colony counts in the histidine groups are low in comparison to those of the popcorn groups, but not as low as the negative control. Most notably, comparison between the high concentrations of popcorn with the high concentrations of histidine shows a much greater colony count in the high popcorn concentration group. Numerically, this group had more than double the quantity of colonies found in the high histidine concentration group. In the TA 1535 300ul plate, 36 colonies were counted in comparison to the 12 colonies in the same strain in the 60ul of histidine. In the TA 1538 300ul plate, 44 colonies were counted in comparison to the 7 colonies in the same strain of 60ul of histidine. From these results, we support the idea that something in the popcorn has a high potent for being a mutagen.
