Formulations LP For each of the following, formulate as a linear programming problem. Be sure to clearly define your variables. Write all constraints so that the variables appear on the left side of the constraint and the righthand side contains no variables. Do not attempt to solve. 1. Captain John s Yachts, Inc., located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, rents three types of ocean-going boats: sailboats, cabin cruisers, and Captain John s favorite, the luxury yachts. Captain John advertises his boats with his famous you rent we pilot slogan, which means that the company supplies the captain and crew for each rented boat. Each rented boat, of course, has one captain, but the crew sizes (that is, deck hands, galley, and so on) differ. The crew requirements, in addition to a captain, are 1 for sailboats, 2 for cabin cruisers, and 3 for yachts. Ten employees are captains, and an additional 18 employees qualify for the crew positions. Currently Captain John has rental requests for all of his boats: 4 sailboats, 8 cabin cruisers, and 3 luxury yachts. If Captain John s daily profits are $50 for sailboats, $70 for cruisers, and $100 for luxury yachts, how many boats of each type should he rent? 2. The Two-Rivers Oil Company near Pittsburgh transports gasoline to its distributors by trucks. The company has recently received a contract to begin supplying gasoline distributors in southern Ohio and has $900,000 available to spend on the necessary expansion of its fleet of gasoline tank trucks. Three models of gasoline tank trucks are available: Capacity (gallons) 5000 2500 1000 Purchase Cost $111,000 $72,000 $48,000 Monthly Operating Costs, Including Depreciation $1100 $850 $700 Truck Model Super Tanker Regular Line Econo-Tanker The company estimates that the monthly demand for the region will be a total of 550,000 gallons of gasoline. Due to the size and speed differences of the trucks, the different truck models will vary in terms of the number of deliveries or round trips possible per month. Trip capacities are estimated at 15 per month for the Super Tanker, 20 per month for the Regular Line, and 25 per month for the Economy Tanker. Based on maintenance and driver availability, the firm does not want to add more than 15 new vehicles to its fleet. In addition, the company would like to make sure it purchases at least three of the new Econo-Tankers use to on the short-run low-demand routes. As a final constraint, the company does not want more than half of the new models to be Super Tankers. If the company wishes to satisfy the gasoline demand with a minimum monthly operating expense, how many models of each truck should be purchased? 3. Channel Island Construction Company is developing a tract of new homes called Harbor Shores. Two models will be available: the luxury and the standard. Each luxury home is expected to contribute $5,000 to the company s profits. It will be constructed on a 2/3 acre lot. The standard model will be constructed on a 1/4 acre lot and is expected to contribute $2,000 to the builder s profit. Local ordinances restrict Harbor Shores to a six acre plot. There must also be at least twice as many luxury homes as standard types. Labor contracts require the company to use at least 50 workers on the project. Each worker is expected to be available for 20 days next month. A luxury home requires 200 people-days to complete, while a standard home requires only 100 people-days. How many homes should the company complete in the next month in order to maximize the builder s profit? 4. Doc s Dog Kennel s Inc., provides overnight lodging for a variety of pets. A particular feature at Doc s is the quality of care the pets receive, including excellent food. The kennel s dog food is made by mixing two brand-name dog food products to obtain what Doc s calls the well-balanced dog diet. The data for the two dog foods are below. Dog Food Bark Bits Canine Chow Cost per Ounce $0.03 $0.025 Protein (percent) 30 20 Fat (percent) 10 20 If Doc wants to be sure that his dogs receive at least 5 ounces of protein and 2 ounces of fat per day, what is the minimum cost mix of the two dog food products? 5. A nut packager has on hand 150 pounds of peanuts, 100 pounds of cashews, and 50 pounds of almonds. The packager can sell three kinds of mixtures of these nuts: a cheap mix consisting of 80% peanuts and 20% cashews; a party mix with 50% peanuts, 30% cashews, and 20% almonds; and a deluxe mix with 20% peanuts, 50% cashews, and 30% almonds. If the 12-ounce can of the cheap mix, the party mix, and the deluxe mix provide a profit of $0.90, $1.10, and $1.30 respectively, how many cans of each type should the packager produce in order to maximize his return?
