Statistics TeamMBA Boot Camp Quiz 3 Name: This quiz is due no later than 11:59 pm, Sunday, December 14, 2008 submitted electronically to kmelton@ngcsu.edu You may use your book and notes, but are not allowed to discuss the problems with others. Show work to support your answers. 1. Write the null and alternative hypotheses that would need to be tested for each of the following situations. Note: You are not being asked to do any calculations. a. The environment is a hot topic these days (no pun intended). In 2001, 36% of individuals polled felt like the U.S. was headed in the right direction in terms of environmental efforts. A new study in 2008 wanted to see if this proportion has increased. b. A fast food franchise operates restaurants in two formats stand alone restaurants and in mall food courts. To determine if the sales total per customer differs for the two types of formats, they collect receipts from a random sample of customers at one free standing and one mall location on the same day during the same two hour interval. c. Some university professors are believed to grade harder than others. In order to see if two professors teaching the same course graded similarly, a random sample of student papers were selected. Then, each professor graded each paper (i.e., every paper was graded twice once by each professor). d. Auto insurance companies usually have an idea how much various types of claims will cost, but the expected cost changes over time. In order to evaluate if the expected cost has increased for a simple fender bender were the bumper will need to be replaced there but is no other damage, the large insurance company collects a random sample of claims filed over the last quarter. They want to see if the expected claim has risen above $900. 2. Hospitals are interested in the average length of stay (LOS) for patients. Historically, the average LOS for one specific treatment code has been 4 days. The hospital has been reviewing processes and undertaking some improvement efforts to reduce the time patients spend in the hospital. Data collected after some changes were implemented are provided in the Length of Stay data set on the Data Sets webpage. Do these provide sufficient evidence (at the .05 level) to conclude that the changes have resulted in an improvement? 3. An article in the Macon Telegraph on Wednesday, November 26, 2008 discussed the upcoming reappraisal of property. The last appraisals were done in 2001. The article claims that these appraisals generally under-value the property. They point to a recent study that compares appraised values and recent sale prices for existing homes. Use the House Values (Appraisal vs. Sale) data on the Data Sets page of the website to determine if there is sufficient evidence to conclude that the appraisals are too low. 4. In July 2005, a survey of 1050 college football fans were asked Do you think the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) should or should not be replaced with a playoff system? The responses were: 682 said yes, 305 said no, and 63 had no opinion. Set up a 90% confidence interval for the proportion of 2005 college football fans that would support a shift to a playoff system.
