from Moving Mindless to Mindful Communication Directions: Spend an entire day communicating mindfully: 1. Avoid meaningless communication refrain from answering questions in ritualistic, routine ways. Rather than asking, How are you? ask How did your interview, test, etc. go yesterday? 2. Connect with each person you meet in a sincere and interested way communicate in the moment. Don t allow your mind to wander to others in the room, the things you need to do that day, what s happened to you in the past, or what you are going to have for lunch. 3. Don t give up when you find yourself communicating mindlessly, simply remind yourself of your goal and get back on track. 4. Communicate ethically refrain from telling little white lies during your conscious communication day. 5. Communicate authentically do not just say things to people please if you don t mean them; speak from your heart. 6. Analyze each communication situation for the needs and expectations of others. Think about possible communication choices before you speak. Adapt your communication to each listener or audience you encounter throughout the day. 7. Ask for and honestly evaluate the feedback you receive. Use the feedback to determine how successful you were in accomplishing your purpose as well as a source of corrective information capable of informing future communication choices. 8. Keep a journal of your mindful communication day. Note events that were conducted mindfully and those which lapsed into mindless communication. 9. Type a -page reflection (Times New Roman, typed, double spaced) telling what you learned from this experience AND how it applies to your communication in your current or future workplace.
