The vast majority holds bachelor s degrees in either history or political science. Most have thought about teaching during undergraduate school and decided to become middle (grades 5-9) or high school (grades 9-12) social studies teachers. Others have made unsatisfying career choices and now realize teaching was their true calling. Whatever the reason, the MAT program at Boston University offers a truly wonderful opportunity to receive a first class academic and professional education in a first class city over one calendar year. Most of our master s candidates begin their coursework in late June and graduate with Massachusetts licensure in May. They usually begin their first year of teaching in September. For full-time students, the MAT is a 12-month program leading to initial licensure for teaching at the middle, junior, or senior high school levels. Students in the MAT program prepare to become professional educators by developing competency in three kinds of courses: (1) specialized knowledge based on concentration a in discipline or field; (2) professional studies in instructional design, human development, communications, classroom methods and evaluation; and (3) practical skills acquired through guided and supervised field experiences. Can students in the Ed.M. and CAGS programs earn a professional license? Yes. A student in an Ed.M. or CAGS program may earn a professional license for classroom teaching with the appropriate preliminary experience while holding initial licensure. The professional license also requires as part of the program a supervised practicum at the professional licensure level. Is financial aid available? Each academic year, the School of Education awards approximately $3.5 million dollars in scholarship money to its full-time graduate students. Meritbased scholarships of $22,000 are currently available to many full-time students. Students with financial need may also qualify for federal loans and Federal Work-Study. Students who enroll in summer classes pay part-time tuition and may be eligible for loans. Priority is given to students who apply for aid by February 15. Ed.D. candidates are encouraged to apply by January 15. Please contact the School of Education Graduate Office of Financial Assistance for further information at sedaid@bu.edu. Q: A: Frequently Asked Questions Q: A: Will I become licensed to teach? Students who complete Boston University s stateapproved teacher licensure program are eligible for licensure in Massachusetts and may be eligible for licensure in 44 other states through a reciprocal agreement. Faculty advisors are prepared to assist students seeking licensure. Students are required to complete an appropriate course selection to meet the licensure standards and any additional Massachusetts Board of Education requirements. What is an Initial License? The Massachusetts Department of Education defines an Initial License as An educator license issued to a person who has completed a bachelor s degree, passed the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure, completed a professional preparation program approved by the Commissioner, and met other eligibility requirements established by the Board. The Initial License is valid for five years of employment and may be renewed at the discretion of the Commissioner for an additional five years.
