STUDY GUIDE FOR LECTURE #23 WEEK 14 Based on Prof. Colliers lecture on Wednesday, November 28th you should be able to... Describe the major differences between the two recordings we heard of Allen Ginsberg reading "America." How do the different performances impact our interpretation or appreciation of the poem? Identify features in "America" that seem to suggest Ginsbergs membership in the avantgarde artistic community. Identify features in "America" that seem to reflect Ginsbergs (and his fellow Beat poets jack kerouac and William Burroughs) belief in: the power of the irrational and the derangement of the senses. Explain what Ginsbergs statement "First thought best thought" meant for him and for the Beat poets belief in the best way to compose a poem. Describe the key differences between Allen Ginsbergs belief in the sanctity of the uncorrected draft and Dylan Thomass mode of constructing poetry. Be sure you have a sense of the cultural environment Ginsberg was reacting to (i.e. massconformity of the 1940s and 50s; McCarthyism; executions of political figures, etc.) Find examples in "America" that show the influence of the King James Bible and walt whitman s poetry (hint: look at formal elements such as line-length; anaphora; etc.) Describe who "America" is addressed to, and what Ginsberg is ,,obssessed with in this poem. Summarize Ginsberg grievances with America how (in this poem) is America hypocritical? unfair? fearmongering? How does the idea of "American exceptionalism" play into this poem? What is Ginsbergs attitude toward it? Describe the similar move both Tony Hoagland and Allen Ginsberg make in their respective "America" poems, and how this influences our ability to sympathize or believe in what theyre saying. Describe the sarcasm and also the ,,freedom Ginsberg alludes to in the final section of the poem that includes his line that he is going to put his "queer shoulder to the wheel." Identify the ways in the poem that Ginsberg (like Whitman) seems himself as representative of all Americans. VOCABULARY: Be sure you know definitions and relevant examples of these terms: avant-garde parallelism elegy anaphora apostrophe
