Morgan Cassie SPAN-152-001 Profesora McCabe 3 December 2007 Extra Credit: Celia Cruz While on Thanksgiving Break, my Mom and I went to go see an off-Broadway show titled Celia. It was an amazing show. I loved every moment of it. The music that they sang during the performance were great choices as well. The play allowed the viewers to have a better understanding of her life and how she grew to become so famous and to be known as "La Reina de Salsa". An actor who played Celia's husband, Pedro Knight, narrated the play. The play started when Celia was a young woman who had begun to enter singing contests to make her voice heard. She did not win them at first because she was considered to be too boring but then her T a Ana taught her to dance. When she entered contests after she learned how to dance, telling her to shake her hips and move her shoulders, she began to win them. There were two actresses who played Celia, one sang and the other did the acting. Both were very good, especially the one who sang. She really sounded just like Celia Cruz. The play also mentioned the trip to Africa that Celia took and what a great impact it had on her and her music. When listening to music her after seeing this play, I could hear some of the songs where she used some of her influences from Africa in her music. Her hatred for Fidel Castro was also a large part of the play. Fidel had total control over what music was allowed to be played and wasn't allowed to be played. Lucky for Celia, Fidel loved her music. The play explained how her and the orchestra she sang with flew to M xico and were not allowed back into Cuba. Celia was now in exile and was not allowed back into Cuba. While in M xico, her mother passed away and Fidel Castro would not her let her back into the country to lay her mother to rest. After being in exile for so long, Celia decided to go to New York to further her singing career. My favorite part of the play was when her and Tito Puente, who also played Pedro Knight's nurse, sang "C cala" together. The chemistry they had with each other was perfect because Pedro Knight had just been specking about how he never got jealous of the other men Celia sang with even if they did have a good stage presence together. I really enjoyed seeing this play and learning more about how Celia Cruz has so greatly influenced the genre of salsa.
