Sec A: M 2 3:10 Soc Sci 2 159 9-4915; email via WebCT Sec B: W 8 9:10 Soc Sci 1 145 SEE THE FINAL PAGE FOR INFORMATION RE: PERMISSION CODES Course description: Through lectures and discussion sections this course will survey the history of Islam from the era of Muhammad through the era of the Caliphates (approximately 550 1250CE). Islam will be approached as a religious, social, political and cultural phenomenon; special emphasis will placed on understanding it in the context of contemporary developments in the Near East, Europe, Africa and Central Asia. Synopsis: This course will combine formal lectures and weekly discussion sections. Beginning with the Near East in the late-sixth century we will study the emergence of Islam and of Arabo-Islamic society and culture and its expansion and development over the next six centuries. The approach will be interdisciplinary, including politics, economy, society, culture and religion. Emphasis will be placed on understanding Islam within the broader religious, cultural and political contexts within which it developed. Among the topics which will be addressed will be minorities groups, relations with non-Muslims, conquest and missionizing, cultural and technological exchange, syncreticism, varieties of Islamic culture, and gender. Course requirements: Students will be expected to attend class and participate in discussions, section attendance is mandatory. You must fill in a course registration form at the time of your first class or you will not be eligible for credit. Over the course of the quarter, each student will write a map quiz, a source study, a mid-term, an essay and a final exam. All assignments must be completed in order to get credit for this course. More than one unexcused absence from section will result in a grade of F/No Pass. Course Web Page (WebCT) The course web page can be found at (http://ic.ucsc.edu/docs/webct/index.shtml).
