420/620 Geog Atmospheric Physics Fall 2006 Problem Set 2 1. (Paraphrase of book problem 2.1) A plume of heated air leaves the cooling tower of a power plant at a pressure of 1000 mb and with a temperature of 30 C. Assume that the air rises dry adiabatically until it is as cool as the surrounding air at its level. The surrounding (environmental) air will have a temperature pro le given by T (z) = T0 e z. a) How high will the air rise if T0 = 20 C and e = 8 C/km? b) How high will the air rise if T0 = 20 C and e = 1 C/km (implying the environmental air gets warmer with height). 2. (Paraphrase of book problem 2.10) Dry air under surface conditions of 20 C and 100 kPa is advected upslope (following a dry adiabatic process) to 70 kPa. Calculate a) the initial and nal speci c volume. b) the nal temperature c) the speci c work performed. (Do not assume that you can do this without coming up with an integral, either with respect to dv or dp there is more than one way to do this. You will need to solve that integral after guring out how to transform every nonconstant term into a function of the integration variable with Poisson equations. If this part seems really easy, you are probably doing it wrong.) d) changes in speci c energy and speci c enthalpy. 3. (a) Potential density D is de ned as the density which dry air would attain if it were transformed reversibly and adiabatically from its existing conditions to a standard pressure p0 (usually 100 kPa). Show that c /c p0 v p D= . p b) Calculate the potential density of a quantity of air at a pressure of 60 kPa and a temperature of 15 C. c) Calculate the potential temperature of the same parcel of air as in (b). 4. An air parcel has an initial temperature of 200 K and pressure of 20 kPa. It descends to a pressure of 50 kPa. (Hints for 2c apply in some cases here.) a) What is the speci c work (work per unit mass) done on the parcel if it descends adiabatically? b) What is the speci c work done on the parcel if it descends isothermally? c) What is the change in potential temperature the of parcel if it descends isothermally? 1 Geog 420/620 Atmospheric Physics Fall 2006 5. (Paraphrase of book problem 2.12, with addition) Commercial aircraft normally cruise near 200 mb with a typical outside temperature of 60 C. a) Calculate the temperature the air will have if compressed adiabatically to a cabin pressure of 800 mb. b) How much speci c heat will need to be added or removed from the air to bring it to a comfortable cabin temperature of 25 C after it has been compressed. c) What would the cabin pressure be if the air were merely compressed (not heated or air conditioned) to reach 25 C? 6. (Paraphrase of book problem 2.14) Chinook winds is the North American term for winds that get much warmer as they descend a mountain slope. Assume a temperature of 10 C at 14 000 feet elevation along the continental divide in Colorado. Under cloud-free conditions, what will the surface temperature in the front range cities at 5000 feet elevation be? Note on the name chinook: Many meteorology books (Salby included) say that chinook means snow eater in some Indian language. This may be true, as there are many lost Indian languages in North America, but I would really like to nd a source reporting a speci c tribal language in which chinook means snow eater. A more credible source for the word is that the Chinook tribe of coastal Oregon, who were met and described by Lewis & Clark in 1805, took their name from the southern wind, which was a warm, moist wind in that location. The Chinook language later became the core of a pidgin or creole language used among European traders and many coastal tribes in that region, so words from the language traveled widely and were also much modi ed. Chinook is now well-understood in the American west as the name for the warm winds descending the mountains at high speed, and they can indeed eat the snow at a remarkable rate. The same kind of wind is called f hn in central Europe, o and has many other local names in other regions where prevailing winds come o the mountains in some seasons. 2
