Week 7 Discussion Question 2 What roles do firewalls and proxy servers play in network security? What is the importance of maintaining security on a LAN? Give examples to support your answer. A proxy server has two purposes; to keep machines behind it anonymous (mainly for security) and to speed up access to a resource (via caching). It is commonly used to cache web pages from a web server. The proxy server deters unwanted individuals from looking into the network. A firewall is a part of a computer system or network that is designed to block unauthorized access while permitting outward communication. Both the proxy server and the firewall help block unauthorized access. Maintaining security on a LAN will keep the network running the way it was indented, keep unauthorized access to a minimum and help catch those that feel the need to test the system security protocols.
