Christoph 1 Kone German House: 172 College Ave. (732)-932-7201 christko@eden.rutgers.edu Office Hours: Mon. 2:30 3.00 PM and by appointment in the German House, 172 College Avenue (2nd floor) Elementary German 01:470:102: 02 Index: 66128 Spring, 2007: Mon, Wed, Thurs: 1:10 2:30 PM Scott Hall 203 Course Description: The course will familiarize students with the German language and culture, using themerelated vocabulary, grammatical structures and authentic materials. Students will practice speaking, writing, reading, and listening to German. Success in this course depends for the most part on the effort and work students put into it. To that end, the written assignments are intended to guide you in practicing the four skills outlined above. Prerequisite: Elementary German 101 or Rutgers Placement Exam. Not open for credit to students who have had two or more years of high school German. Course Goals: Students will be able to communicate in German in the following situations: Expressing opinions, likes & dislikes and preferences Making suggestions & polite requests Making travel plans, reserving train tickets and hotel rooms Reading timetables, tourist brochures and advertisements Asking for directions and identifying places on a city map Identifying countries & cities on a map and telling where people come from Asking and identifying prices, measurements and sizes Ordering food and drinks in a restaurant Making plans for leisure time activities Describing morning and daily routines and identifying parts of the body Expressing frequency of events Narrating events in the past Reading authentic literary texts and relating them to historical events in Germany Comparing environmental issues in Germany and the US Discussing Germany s role in Europe Recommended course: Students of 102 are strongly encouraged to enroll in Elementary German Lab course (01:470:104:01) that meets on Wednesdays: (2:50 4:10 pm) in Lang Lab 119. This one- 2 credit course provides an organized review of important course material with exciting activities. Assessment: Homework, WB, and outside assignments: Oral Assessments Written Quizzes/Tests Participation/Attendance Final Exam (oral & written assessment) 20% 20% 20% 20% 20% Grades: Grades will be assigned according to the following scale: A: 90-100%; B+: 85-89%; B: 80-84%; C+: 75-79%; C: 70-74%; D: 66-69%; F: 65% and below Required Texts: Text: Neue Horizonte (Dollenmayer, Crocker, Hansen) Houghton Mifflin 2003, 6th edition, ISBN: 0-618-24129-9 Neue Horizonte Workbook/Laboratory Manual/ Video Workbook. Dollenmayer/Crocker/Hansen, Houghton Mifflin 2003 Attendance: All students must attend regularly and arrive prepared. Those who miss more than 3 classes without a compelling excuse (a doctor s or college dean s note for instance) should expect a one-step reduction in the course grade (i.e. an A becomes a B+, a B+ becomes a B). Three late arrivals count as one absence. Note: It is the responsibility of students who have been absent (for any reason) to find out what they have missed and obtain materials that may have been handed out. Plagiarism: Plagiarism is an extremely serious matter, and can lead to a student s failing the course and being referred to his or her dean for disciplinary action. When referring to ideas other than your own, always acknowledge your sources clearly and completely, whether you are quoting or paraphrasing. Please see the University s policies on academic integrity at http://teachx.rutgers.edu/integrity/policy.html, and discuss with your instructor any questions you may have about this and related issues. Photocopies: Department photocopying fees add up quickly and impressively; we will therefore need to collect from each student 5 cents per page toward the cost of handouts other than the syllabus, quizzes and tests. Final Exam: Thursday, May 8, 2008 12.00---------15:00Uhr The assignments listed on this syllabus will require you to review your class notes, 3 make use of your textbook and workbook, and visit the language lab. These assignments will be collected and/or spot-checked regularly and assigned a grade. It is highly recommended to get a soft-cover German-English dictionary as well. Assignments that are incomplete at the time they are collected or checked will not receive full credit.
