Course Objective This course is designed to (1) acquaint students with a broad array of environmental problems and policies; (2) provide examples of approaches to environmental problem-solving and the outcomes associated with them; (3) address the role of analytic methods in environmental decision making processes;(4) illustrate the importance of interdisciplinary teamwork and partnering in addressing environmental problems; (5) differentiate the roles of the analyst and decision maker; and (6) stress the importance of holistic approaches to environmental problem-solving. Note that the content of the following outline will be covered, but that the sequencing of topics and the time allotted to them may vary, depending upon the length of discussions and other factors.. 2. Those missing more than one class without a written medical or similar excuse will lose one letter grade for each absence. Students will be called upon, from time to time, to give reports on current news items. In general, there will be about 5 reports given each week. Distance learning students will be asked to provide e-mail summaries of articles upon request. Oral responses to questions will be expected and there will be classroom discussions. Copies of computerized slides, homework and reading assignments and other course materials will be found on the ENV 5075 Web page: http://ufedge.eng.ufl.edu/arch/ENV5075/ Class will convene at 5:10PM, there will be a 10 minute break at 6:30PM and class will be adjourned at 7:50PM. Homework There will be weekly reading assignments (see Web page) A term paper, single spaced, of not less than 10 pages or more than 15 pages, including a list of references, is required. The topic of the paper is to be approved in advance by Dr. Viessman. It is to be a case study prepared in a manner similar to that of the cases presented by Layzer. The paper will be due on November 21. The paper is to have a: title page, table of contents, and executive summary. It is to cover the history and nature of the issue being addressed, actions taken or proposed to deal with the issue, an assessment of the implemented or proposed courses of action, a discussion of the success or failure of the policymaking process, and your recommendations for a follow-up process if you think that it is needed. . Grading There will be 3 quizzes (about 60 minutes each) covering reading assignments and class lectures. Quiz dates are: Sept. 26, Oct.31, Nov. 28. The quizzes will count 50% of the grade The term paper will count 50% of the grade. Term papers not delivered by the deadline wil be penalized in grade. Consult instructor regarding make-up exams or other work. Accommodation for Students With Disabilities Students requesting classroom accommodation must first register with the Dean of Students Office. That office will provide the student with documentation that he/she must provide the course instructor when rerquesting the accommodation.
