Carolyn Dr. Fabian Stumph This is my sixth year at IPFW. I enjoy teaching and I hope that you learn a great deal in this course. I have taught international finance twice and international economics twice before. I also teach (with others) Introduction to International Studies. My office hours are listed below, but I am usually around. Please feel free to stop by or contact me at any time. Office Hours: Office: Work: Home: Fax: Email: Tuesday/Thursday Neff Hall, 340F 481-6475 625-6525 481-6879 stumphc@ipfw.edu 12 to 1 pm or by appointment SYLLABUS International Economics Economics 430, section 1 Indiana University/Purdue University Fort Wayne Course Objective: You and other Americans use or consume tens of thousands of things every day: Japanese cars, gasoline refined from Saudi Arabian crude oil, computers from Indonesia and cell phones from Finland. Millions of decisions went into the creation, organization and distribution of these products. How does it happen? And, the perhaps more important question, why? The objective of this course is to provide you with a thorough understanding of the international economy. In order to meet this objective, you will develop economic modeling skills to explain why nations trade and the effects of free and restricted trade policies. You will gain insight into the strategic implications of international trade and international politics. Finally, you will understand the foreign exchange market and the implications of international monetary policy. Economics 430 supports the Doermer School of Business learning objectives through the development of analytical skills for understanding the international environment in which firms and individuals operate and preparation for lifelong learning through the ability to apply abstract concepts. Required Text: Sawyer, W. Charles and Richard L. Sprinkle, International Economics, 3rd edition, Pearson Prentice Hall, 2009. Fall 2008 Course Requirements: Your final grade will be determined as follows: International exam finance International trade exam Data Analysis Homework Class participation/ attendance* 200 200 200 100 50 750 *You must earn (points not yours to lose) the class participation points. You can earn points through good class attendance and active participation in class discussion (both asking questions and providing answers). A suggested guide to the assignment of class participation points follows: Attendance\Participation Extensive Moderate Limited Good (1-2 misses) 50 50 30 Moderate (3 misses) 50 40 30 Weak (4-5 misses) 20 10 0 Poor (more than 5) 0 0 0 None 20 10 0 0 Only in the case of a medical emergency will a make-up examination be administered. Course Outline and Reading Assignments: I plan to add in several outside articles as the semester progresses. I will provide these to you or place them on reserve in the library.
