March SC404.01 25, 2008 Chapter 14 Review Questions Draw simple sketches of our galaxy as it would appear face- on and edge-on. Identify the disk, bulge, halo, and spiral arms, and indicate the galaxy's approximate dimensions. 7.) Cosmic rays are particles such as electrons, protons, and atomic nuclei that zip through interstellar space at close to the speed of light. It is thought that some supernovae may generate these rays. 12.) The spiral arm is a densely packed area, so when large the gas clouds collide and enhance the gravity within them, star formation in triggered. The constant gravitational flow and pull allows the stars to hold the spiral arms together. 16.) Sagittarius A-star or Sgr A* is the exact center of the galaxy. It was believed that it contained a few million solar masses, but observations show that there are not nearly enough stars in this region to account for so much mass, so that's where they get the idea of a massive black hole.
