crew Film follows NDSU Antarctic researchers As a four-time veteran of extended expeditions to the frozen climes of Antarctica, Allan Ashworth, professor of geosciences, is used to the isolation that comes with weeks in tents with only a few fellow scientists. His latest excursion, however, enforced the old adage, misery loves company. During his seven weeks last fall in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of the Olympus Mountain Range, Ashworth and his group were followed by a documentary crew led by Anne Aghion, the Emmy Award-winning filmmaker of, In Rwanda we say the family that does not speak dies. When you re being photographed in work under tough conditions, and there s also a film crew suffering, it doesn t make it as remote, Ashworth said. His team was able to find what they were looking for, exceptionally well-preserved moss fossils and high-quality, frozen sediments from which they will be able to extract ancient DNA. Funded by a National Science Foundation grant, Ashworth s team included Adam Lewis, a postdoctoral associate at the Byrd Polar Research Center at Ohio State University, Columbus, and NDSU geology seniors Andrew Podoll and Kelly Gorz the first students to accompany Ashworth to Antarctica. He said it took time to get some degree of comfort around the cameras, but he always noticed them. It was hard not to when squeezing cameras and scientists into the small mess hall tent where the students also slept. For her part, Aghion was drawn to the project by the sense of place caused by isolation for weeks on end. When you re down there working, what you have is something that s very much focused on the moment and the place re you in, she said. During the filming, Ashworth noted a difference between his and Aghion s goals. Our focus was on geology, he said. I think Anne felt there had to be something else an additional romantic reason. We were there for the science. There s nothing else more romantic to us than to be involved in discovery. Aghion, however, noted one cannot have science without the people doing it. I was interested in the people behind the science, she said, When you re in close quarters and can t leave, it s a very particular experience. You have to adapt to the situation. I was interested in seeing how that would take place. It s not an easy situation for four people to be together all the time and be completely interdependent. Filmmakers (above) followed researchers (left) Allan Ashworth, NDSU seniors Kelly Gorz and Andrew Podoll, and Adam Lewis of the Byrd Polar Research Center during seven weeks in Antarctica. Aghion also spent time at McMurdo Station with the people who work behind the scenes, but she said Ashworth and his team function as the film s core. She is now back in New York and sifting through 200 hours of footage to complete the project in the next year. Her project is funded by the Antarctic Artists and Writers Program though the National Science Foundation. In the end her movies are about people, Ashworth said. I hope it comes out a positive experience in that way, that kids looking at it may say, Gee, that s what I want to do when I grow up. Ashworth hopes to go on one more Antarctic expedition in 2008.
