Monday 15 January 2007 through Friday 27 April 2007 except Monday 5 March 2007 through Friday 9 March 2007 Final Exam: Thursday 3 May 2007 10:00 A.M. 11:50 A.M. 1205 New Science Facility Instructor: Andy Poe, 1129 New Science Facility, 227-1598 This course is required for Computer Science and Network Computing majors and will be of interest to all students interested in computer programming. How to program in Java will be the focus of this class. Text: The standard CS120 textbook will be reserved at the bookstore, but I am not requiring it for this section. I recommend that you also get yourself a Java reference book. Most bookstores have any number of Java reference guides. Sadly, the ones with the most complete information tend also to be the most difficult to read. Find one that seems to make sense to you. Java documentation (for free) is also available from my webpage. Laptop Policy: Although this is a Computer Science course, the use of a laptop in class is forbidden in class and on exams. There will be exceptions to this policy, such as when we install software or when we have lab days. But, in general, if I'm lecturing, no laptops, or any other distracting electronic equipment such as Walkmans, iPods, cell phones, etc. Courseload: 60% of your grade will be based on frequent written and programming assignments. There will be two in-class worth exams 10% each, and a final exam worth 20%. Office Hours: 3:00 5:00 P.M. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. Other hours are available by appointment, or you can just drop by. If I'm free, I'm happy to talk with you. However, please respect my lunch hour (12:00 P.M. 1:00 P.M.). Because of irregularly scheduled meetings, office hours on Tuesday are difficult to arrange. This course satisfies the Formal Communication Studies requirement. These courses are designed to introduce students to the ways in which information and ideas are expressed using a communication system other than English. Such courses should foster the student's ability to conceptualize and communicate in an orderly, rational manner. Characteristics of a communication system include: 1) possession of a grammar; 2) operation from an established set of rules; 3) reasoning properties such as deduction, inference drawing and problem solving. This includes courses in languages and those in which the central focus of the course is on statistics, computers or formal logic.
